Ancient kingdom that became the dominant power on at the height of human empires in the Age of Humanity (see Long History of Toril). Legends tell of flying cities and destroying the Goddess of Magic herself out of greed for her power.

Ancient Tome

From the book found in the Wave Echo Caves ruins:

Netheril Empire

  • The Netheril Empire began over 5000 years ago, advancing magic beyond nearly all others
  • First floating city (Xinlenal) created over 4000 years ago
  • Eventually more than a dozen sky-cities building a powerful empire through conquest
  • Netheril’s over-use of magic is destroying homeland of creatures called Phaerimm
  • Phaerimm fight back, begin to take down cities almost 2000 years ago
  • 100 years into the Netheril-Phaerimm war, a super-powerful Netheril named Karsis, with his own city of Karssus
    • Seeks to stop the Phaerimm once and for all - by enveloping power of Mystryl
    • Mystryl, goddess of the magic weave (source of magic) sacrifices herself to stop him
    • All Netheril cities crash to the ground - where Karssus crashed is today the city of Karse
    • Mystryl reborn as Mystra
  • The Netheril of the crashed cities become various powers and factions over history of Faerûn
  • One floating city, Thulanthar, avoided the big crash with the Mystryl/Karsis event
    • because it had plane shifted a few years before that event
    • to the Plane of Shadow, where Thulanthar spent 1600 years
    • These Netheril were changed in their time there, become known as the Shadovar
    • Shadovar worship Shar (largely forbidden in most places)
    • Returns to Toril in 1372 DR (“year of wild magic”)
    • Rumored to have recently crashed in the Anauroch desert,
    • brought down by The Harpers

The Phandelver Pact

  • Technically, called the Phandelver Pact of Wave Echo Cave, founded 898 DR
    • The Sword Mountains contained ores the Netheril refined into special magic crystal batteries
    • The batteries, called mythallar became large and powerful enough to power the floating cities
    • So a large group of Netheril descendants worked with Dwarves and Gnomes in Phandelver
    • Having lost ancient power and lore, these Netheril partnered with the craftsmen races to apply their remaining knowledge to the ore's use in enchantments
    • Together they built the Forge of Spells, operated it for over 50 years
  • Until 927 DR when Uruth Ukrypt becomes King of the Orcs, unifying clans
    • Orc horde invades the Sword Coast in 951 DR, including wizards and powerful shaman
    • Phandelver destroyed (massive battle, earthquakes, rockslides)
