On her sixteenth birthday, Elannah was officially recognized as the heir to the Paradisian throne. During the royal ceremony the King gifted Elannah the Sword of the King, a royal artifact passed down through the royal family for thousands of years, signifying the transfer of power from the reigning monarch to the next in line.
Later that night, the catastrophe happened. Elannah was cursed by an unknown entity, causing an eruption of dark energy that destroyed the castle. After emerging from the rubble, her eyes were glowing purple, her wings and hair had turned black, and a dark aura surrounded her. The people of Paradiso instantly believed that Elannah had turned into a demon and killed the King and Queen in order to gain their power, just hours after becoming their successor. The people attacked her, held her down while they took turns beating her, and tied her to the ground with iron chains. The last thing Elannah saw was an ax being swung down to execute her, but that's when another burst of dark energy exploded from her, saving her life.
When she woke up, Elannah was surrounded by dead bodies and crumbled ruins. Everyone and everything in Paradiso was dead, only Elannah was left. Scared and alone, She fled the country, taking her royal sword and the iron chains with her.
Somehow, Elannah ended up in Barovia Not knowing where she was or who she could trust, she disguised herself by stealing clothes from a clothesline and crafting a headdress out of and animal skull and loose feathers. To protect herself, Elannah changed her name to Saryn, the name of her older sister. She fought her way through the barovian wilds for what seemed like an eternity, until she met The Flame Hearts and joined their party.
