the Ultimate Photographer, Mahiru had a bright life ahead of her as a student of Hopes Peak. unfortunately, she was not without enemies, envious of her spot and willing to kill to take it.
also unfortunately, she was part of the class that got targetted by the Ultimate Despair. try as she might, as headstrong and well-meaning as she is (despite her abraisiveness, she is easily a voice of reason)... between the deaths which occurred that she was indirectly responsible for, and the stress chipping away at her class, she was no match for the pain of heartbreak and despair.
though she along with the rest of her class have now been freed from Despair's influence, no longer slaves to it's cause, it does not change the fact that no amount of apologizing will forgive the horrors they created, nor ease the pain they are responsible for. all she can do is try to atone, and work from the shadows to repair what they destroyed.
