Masvirik'uala

Humanoid

The lizardfolk of Q'barra are one of the oldest races on Khorvaire. During the Age of Demons, they were dominated by the overlord Masvirik until they were freed by the couatl and the formation of the Silver Flame. The couatl planted a seed in the collective consciousness of the lizardfolk to unite them and help them prevent Masvirik from ever rising again: the lizardfolk shared dreams. These dreams aren't just dreams as we know them, they’re lessons and a record of history. They dream of the battles their ancestors fought against the demons, and they learn how to fight from these dreams. They dream of Masvirik, and these dreams teach them what they are fighting against and why it must never be allowed to escape its bonds.

The Masvirik’uala, or the Cold Sun Federation, are an alliance of lizardfolk tribes in Q’barra, who are joined in shared dreams and purpose. They understand better than anyone what it means for an overlord to be released, and they dedicate their entire lives to ensuring that Masvirik remains imprisoned. Arguably, the Cold Sun Federation is the oldest government in Khorvaire, but their society isn’t structured with a central government, instead the tribal leaders come together to discuss matters as and when required. They don’t need power to be concentrated with any one tribe or individual because they all share the same background and values; they’ve all dreamt the same dreams for their entire lives. The tribes never fight, they work together to share territory and resources and when one tribe becomes too large for an area to sustain, they split into smaller tribes and move. They aren't set apart by petty feuds or hunger for glory, they all know the enemy they must stand against, and they all know the consequences for failure.

The lizardfolk have no written language, because they don't need one. Everything they need to know is communicated to them via their dreams, and this had led to their culture remaining largely unchanged despite being ancient. Their dreams haven't changed, and their dreams tell them how to live their lives. They all know the same stories, and the idea of having to explain these references is alien to them. Everyone knows their stories, so why would they ever need to explain them? It sounds like a facetious comparison, but the culture of the lizardfolk is highly memetic and they all have a shared point of reference for these metaphors and memes.

This makes communication with the lizardfolk difficult, because even spells like comprehend languages can't unpack all the context behind their metaphors. The lizardfolk of Q'barra call themselves the Masvirik'uala, which literally translates to "Cold Sun Federation". The lizardfolk understand this to mean that they stand against the Cold Sun. However, most humans assume that this is the federation of the Cold Sun, that it's something they rally around. Likewise, it is obvious to the lizardfolk that the people they kill in Q'barra are agents of the Cold Sun, and they know from their experience with the Poison Dusk and other corrupted creatures that there is no reasoning with, or saving, those who have fallen to Masvirik's corruption. The only mercy they can provide is a quick and painless death.

Whilst the lizardfolk might seem aesthetically to be a druidic culture like the shifters of the Eldeen Reaches, this isn’t the case. The lizardfolk channel the force of light that holds back the darkness of the Cold Sun, and the winged serpents that formed it in the first age of the world, the force that binds the overlords in Khyber and granted Tira Miron the power to face Bel Shalor.

To say that the lizardfolk worship the Silver Flame would be inaccurate, they were there when it was created by the couatl and thanks to their dreams, even the modern lizardfolk remember that moment. Instead, the lizardfolk serve and utilize the Silver Flame, it is the power that holds back the darkness, and they are its agents in the world. The Silver Flame empowers the lizardfolk much like it does the paladins of the church. Lizardfolk mystics are akin to clerics and paladins, channeling the divine power of the Silver Flame in their conflict against the Poison Dusk and the influence of the Cold Sun.

The lizardfolk do revere the couatl, however, and they honor the ancient sacrifice that gave them the future they now protect. The couatl continue to communicate with the lizardfolk via their dreams, albeit never directly, instead the dreams provide the lizardfolk with guidance that the lizardfolk believe to be from the couatl. It could be easy for the lizardfolk to view their dreams as a curse, confining them to a life of conflict with an ancient evil, but the lizardfolk have never known anything else and they don’t see it that way, it’s simply how life is.

The lizardfolk are one of the few peoples on Eberron that remember the Age of Demons, they experience the horror in their dreams, and they know what it was like to live under an overlord, even today. Though they weren’t changed like the Shulassakar, the lizardfolk have been connected to the Silver Flame since its creation, thanks to the couatl. Masvirik’uala lizardfolk do not dream in Dal Quor like most creatures do, instead their dreams are within the Silver Flame itself. The lizardfolk cannot be influenced by the quori or other fiends in their dreams because their dreams are inaccessible to such forces.
