Beyond the World

Salem, a renowned soldier to her kingdom. She was the Queen’s right hand and defender of justice. For years she served her Queen and for years she watched. The Queen had become obsessed over dragons. Those born of dragons, those who hold onto dragon blood, she wanted more and more. Each new dragon ally was a powerful foe to face for attackers.

It wasn’t long before the strength had overtaken the Queen. It wasn’t long before she was using her dragon kind against her own people. Those who would defy her in any way were met with a terrible fate.

Salem watched as the Queen grew more and more corrupted with the overwhelming power. Criminals who bribed the Queen were able to get away with anything while the innocent perished. As long as the Queen got what she wanted people suffered. It was all at the hands of dragons.

Salem couldn’t take it anymore. It wasn’t just the dragons that caused bloodshed for the Queen’s wants and desires. Salem too watched the life leave people’s eyes due the unjust ruling of the Queen.

It came to a point where Salem would attempt to kill the dragons for the good of the people. With the eggs destroyed Salem was discovered. The enraged mother dragon ferociously attacked the nimble Tabaxi with a blast of fire. All Salem could do was evade the attacks. She did not have enough strength to defeat her.

The entire palace was on fire as the dragon was on a rampage. The rampaging spread on to the town below killing many who tried to seek refuge from the destruction. Salem tried her luck and went after the dragon. However, she met with a terrible fate. The dragon struck her with her massive claws nearly killing her in the process and causing her to lose an eye.

She managed to pull herself and hide as she was dying. Salem believed that at that point there was no point to it all. She knew that even if she were to stop the dragons the Queen would just find more. Even if she were to kill the Queen, another would take her place. It was a never ending process. There were always people causing death and destruction. Salem wanted to create a safe haven. A place of justice. A place of purity and serenity. She needed to get rid of every bad seed that would destroy that dream. In order to do that she needed more power, the power she would never see.

It was in the midst of her doubts of a perfect world that she had begun to hear a voice. It was calling for her almost as if it was deep within herself. The voice asked her what she wanted to which she responded, “A perfect world”. The voice then asked how she would create this perfect world. She said to the voice, “By getting rid of the wretched vermin that walk among us”. It seemed that the voice was amused with her claiming that she was nothing more than a weak kitten. “I’d rather sit here and die then. I don’t want to watch the world be run by sinners”. The voice then offered a proposal. It would grant her the power she seeks only if she pledges loyalty to it. Salem was skeptical of the offer claiming that the voice was nothing more than a voice and was filled with distrust. She claimed that it could be no different than the Queen she once trusted. The voice in her head also claimed that they wanted to see a perfect world leaving Salem to gain a little trust in it.

“If I do as you wish, will you help me create this perfect world?” she asked the voice.

“I will give you the power you need just this once. Prove to me that you are loyal to your ideals and show me the start of your perfect world. Only then will I take you under my wing.”

“And what do you wish for in return?” she asked the voice as her breath was shortening.

“A heart.”

“A heart?” she repeated.

“A heart. You will learn more as time goes on. But for now, I will help you.”

Power surged through Salem’s veins as everything began to grow dark. She couldn’t remember what happened after that, but she woke up on the outskirts of the town. As she sat up, she could see smoke in the distance of what was left. The Palace was in shambles. Salem ventured into the town to find all of the Queen’s dragons dead, all of the dragonbornes dead, all of the half-bloods were dead. Even the Queen herself had perished along with all of her men. There were very few survivors still around. They were the lucky ones. They were the ones who would be the start of the perfect world.

Oath of Conquest - Subclass

The Oath of Conquest calls to paladins who seek glory in battle and the subjugation of their enemies. It isn’t enough for these paladins to establish order. They must crush the forces of chaos. Sometimes called knight tyrants or iron mongers, those who swear this oath gather into grim orders that serve gods or philosophies of war and well-ordered might.

Some of these paladins go so far as to consort with the powers of the Nine Hells, valuing the rule of law over the balm of mercy. The archdevil Bel, warlord of Avernus, counts many of these paladins — called hell knights — as his most ardent supporters. Hell knights cover their armor with trophies taken from fallen enemies, a grim warning to any who dare oppose them and the decrees of their lords. These knights are often most fiercely resisted by other paladins of this oath, who believe that the hell knights have wandered too far into darkness.

TENETS OF CONQUEST

A paladin who takes this oath has the tenets of conquest seared on the upper arm.

Douse the Flame of Hope. It is not enough to merely defeat an enemy in battle. Your victory must be so overwhelming that your enemies’ will to fight is shattered forever. A blade can end a life. Fear can end an empire.

Rule with an Iron Fist. Once you have conquered, tolerate no dissent. Your word is law. Those who obey it shall be favored. Those who defy it shall be punished as an example to all who might follow.

Strength Above All. You shall rule until a stronger one arises. Then you must grow mightier and meet the challenge, or fall to your own ruin.

Oath of Conquest Spells

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.

Conquering Presence. You can use your Channel Divinity to exude a terrifying presence. As an action, you force each creature of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature becomes frightened of you for 1 minute. The frightened creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Guided Strike. You can use your Channel Divinity to strike with supernatural accuracy. When you make an attack roll, you can use your Channel Divinity to gain a +10 bonus to the roll. You make this choice after you see the roll, but before the DM says whether the attack hits or misses.

Aura of Conquest

Starting at 7th level, you constantly emanate a menacing aura while you’re not incapacitated. The aura extends 10 feet from you in every direction, but not through total cover.

If a creature is frightened of you, its speed is reduced to 0 while in the aura, and that creature takes psychic damage equal to half your paladin level if it starts its turn there.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Scornful Rebuke

Starting at 15th level, those who dare to strike you are psychically punished for their audacity. Whenever a creature hits you with an attack, that creature takes psychic damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1) if you’re not incapacitated.

Invincible Conqueror

At 20th level, you gain the ability to harness extraordinary martial prowess. As an action, you can magically become an avatar of conquest, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You have resistance to all damage.
  • When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can make one additional attack as part of that action.
  • Your melee weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
