The Storm Drives the Seasons
Alcott uses a Stormal calendar. At the beginning of every year a powerful storm rolls across the land. This seems to do damage to cities and civilized lands but tends to just brush across the open wildlands. These storms are so severe that people use bunkers to ride out the worst of them for days as it rolls across the land. The first month of each year is called the Stormseason and lasts for about two weeks. There are four years in the cycle of Alcott around the sun.
The storms are used as a manner of punishment. Leaving those to be punished out in the storm. Most die but those that survive are Stormblessed and released from other punishment. Besides prisoners very few people go out into the storms, willingly. There are messengers in large cities that travel between the bunker and those that are just crazy. All of these are referred to as Stormblessed.
As a side effect of the yearly storm, it recharges gems that light up. These gems are used all over North Morley. Most free people within the kingdom have a selection of gems. The size and cut of the gem determine how long the glow from the storm will last. Most have hours of light within them, and more rare ones have days or even weeks of use in them. The light does not dissipate if they are stored in a dark cloth bag. They are used to light up most of the cities at night. They cast light in a manner that has a slight color based on the charged gem.

Magic and Technology
Spell casting is rare and can only be done by females. All people and characters believe this, but it is not true. The Enclave control all magic and only let females live to do it. They like jedi take young girls and train them in Gaddel. It is only possible to cast spells if you have a Writ Arcanum. These come in different forms but the most common is as a metal pendent that is worn around the neck. There are no components in this game.
Alcott has a university system and advanced science compared to most game worlds. There has been study into biology, chemistry, thermodynamics, early electricity, and other areas. This has led to early photography, hot air balloons, electroplating, and more advanced medical care. Early steam power exists but no one has built anything like a train or steam barge. They might be right around the corner. One of the strange things is that gun powder does not work. Many researchers have investigated it and think it should work, but it does not. Instead of having an explosive like reaction it just fizzles. Yeah science.
People
There are five civilized species that are known in this world. Human’s which make up most of the known people in the civilized world are the main species in North and South Morley. Orcs are the second most abundant species, but only a small fraction live in the civilized world. There are five known types of orcs. Only the Red Orc live within the kingdom of Eadwald. The Mul look mostly human but have an innate magical resistance. They are seen as a lesser people and make up a mostly unpaid labor throughout the land. Strangely they are often not noticed as they work in the cities and fields. They are not generally treated bad and do not seem to seek out freedom. A small number are free. They carry papers of that. The Immortuos are undead. They are destroyed when found but they can live within society, if careful without much worry about being found. Familiars are handled very differently on this world than other worlds. When summoned, they are an actual creature and not fey. The process uplifts them. When a master dies or dismisses them, most maintain their uplift status. They are intelligent and can speak. They are rare in the south. In Northgate they are far more common. They are often treated poorly so stay in the shadows.
Lands and Skies
The skies above are different from earth. First off there are no moons. I will be honest and say I have no idea how this would affect waves and tides, so no noticeable tides but wind and rotation effect waves, do exist. There are many falling stars almost every night. They come in patterns and some seasons see more than others. They come in many colors as they streak across the sky. They are mostly seen at night but on rare days, they can be seen during the day. The larger or closer ones are followed by thunder.
The known world consists of North and South Morley. The few who have traveled to the south end of South Morley know there is a land south of it. It is a frozen waste land. There is a Kingdom that covers most of North Morley. It has five cities and many small communities. On the southern coast is the city state of Gaddel. It is run and control by the Magical Academy called The Enclave. Its head mistress known as The Vale rules the city and lands around it. It is believed that the lands on the west coast are a terrible wasteland where no one can live. South Morley has one city referred to as the Foundry.
These two lands have not been filled with people as humans are still recovering since the last epoch. There are unknown lands. I will not give any details here.
Rylain Church, Inquisitors and Cults
Before getting into the gods, first we must say that no god currently gives magical abilities to anyone. Next let’s talk about the Epochs in Alcott. The game currently takes place in the third Epoch. The first Epoch is called Before Demons (BD) and is a long time ago. Very little is known about this time. Ruins and artifacts exist from this period but most were ruined in the second epoch, the Post Demons (PD). This was a short time period of about 1000 years. It is marked with chaos as it is when the demons first arrived. Two group rose to finally pin the demons to the north. Working together The Enclave and the Rylian Church worked to make a workable process with to control the demons threat. The Rylian Church used this to become the only legal religious pantheon. The current epoch is called The Demon Equilibrius (DE).
Note: The Church of the 12 (13th) is based on the books The Gentlemen Bastards. I have not really worked on it much.
The church is broken into two main groups. There are many fighting Monks that are used as soldiers and protectors for the different temples and priests. The other group are these strange powerful Inquisitors. They are humans that have gone through a horrific magical process, where big spikes are pounded through their eyes. They are few in number but very powerful. Avoid fighting them. They are tasked with finding cults and rooting them out. They are above the law in all ways.
Everything else is considered an illegal cult. If they are discovered, they are hunted by the inquisitors and killed. There are many of them. This is sometimes used to destroy your enemy. Surprisingly enough it is not used as often as you think as the inquisitors in their cruel investigations will discover the intrigue and kill everyone involved.
The Rylian Church
Alcott has many gods. Officially The Rylain church has twelve gods. Many talk about a thirteenth nameless god. This is considered a cult inside the church but there is a high level secret sect within the church for the nameless god, the crocked warden.
There are no other legal religions in the civilized world. The Rylian church works very hard to wipe out other religions and pantheons. They not only move in to wipe the people involved; they wipe out all reference to any other religion. They use two main groups within the church to excise other religions. The Inquisitors and the priestly monks.
The Inquistors
Inquisitors are high priests within the church. They travel when and wherever they like. They mostly move around handling disputes, but their real goal is to remove heresy. They are easy to spot. They have large metal spikes that have been pushed through their eyes and slightly protrude from the backs of their skulls. They have amazing abilities, including the ability to sense religious and magical use.
Holy Fighting Orders
The holy fighting orders are martial artists that guard temples and other religious locations. They are the fighting monks of Ryloth. They come in many different forms, but most are monks. They can be called in at any time by the inquisitors to help weed out heresy.
Rylian Panthian
Priests within the church concentrate on one of the gods. They will know teaching for the other twelve but will only call one of them their patron. Below is a list of the gods:
- Aza Guilla- The Lady of the Long Silence, goddess of death.
- Azri - god of nature, weather and war.
- Callo Androno - The Eyes on the Crossroad, god of travel, languages and lore.
- Dama Elliza - Mother of Rains and Reaping, goddess of agriculture and farming.
- Gandolo - Lord of Coin and Commerce, god of merchants and trade.
- Iono - The Lord of the Grasping Water, god of the sea.
- Morgante - The Lord of Noose and Trowel, god of law and order
- Nara - The Lady of Ubiquitous Maladies, goddess of sickness and poison.
- Perelandro - Lord of the Overlooked, god of mercy and charity.
- Preva - Lady of the Red Madness, goddess of love, madness and inspiration.
- Sendovani - goddess of secrets, mysteries, knowledge, alchemy.
- Venaportha - The Lady with Two Faces, goddess of luck.
- The Nameless - Some also believe in a thirteenth god, the Nameless Thirteenth, the Crooked Warden, the Benefactor, god of thieves.
