“Tomorrow I would like to go down and collect some of that obsidian that we found,” Oni said absently to whoever will listen.

“I will go with.” Ayassa said, “I might be able to repair my sword with it.”

Oni looked thoughtful for a moment, and mumbled to himself, “I believe I might have something better for that, soon…”

And with that, the Yavapai unrolled their sleeping mats and settled down for the night. Tomorrow will be another big day. They wanted to clear out the underground area they discovered and maybe, just maybe, finding more than just that map.

A sound woke Selise in the middle of the night. She has always been a light sleeper. Paula, Selise’s mother, used to tease her that she would wake up every time she tried to sneak out to make water. “Can’t I pee in peace girl?!” she would say berating her.

This time, however, it was something different, a sound… one only heard in her dreams. Someone was also talking on the other side of the watering hole! She had to investigate. She quietly stepped over her sleeping brothers and headed to the other side hidden in the moonless dark.

“Yes, my master, Vashir still seems to have no memory of it, it must have worked.”

Selise recognize that voice to be the tribe’s leader – Agis! But who was he talking to?? Who was this Vashir?

She snuck just a little bit closer.

A deep disembodied voice, one Selise did not recognize, quietly said, “Gooood.  I think they can handle themselves for now on, I need you back here.”

“Thank the five,” Agis whispered back, “I do not think I could handle another day of this heat and sand.”

Selise moved just a little closer, she had to see who Agis was talking to, but instead, she saw a bead of captured lightning start to grow just a few feet from where Agis stood. And as she watched it, it grew to be man-sized, like a pool of liquid smoke laid on its side surrounded by silent lightning. Agis turned and looked around, and saw right through Selise. And with a never-seen-before smile on his face, he stepped through the portal and disappeared from the desert.

The electrifying pool started to shrink in size, and Selise realized she had to make a quick decision, and within those seconds the portal took to close, she decided that she had to know what was happening, she had to protect the Yavapai and her family, and she leaped into the closing portal.

The rising sun cast long and cool shadows across the oasis.

“Is everyone ready to down?”

Joe Dai, turned to his brother and instead of answering said, “I can’t find Selise”.

Oni rolled his eyes and said, “We never can!” and busted out laughing. “Let’s head down, she will show up eventually.”
