A Primer on Kanka

Creating Your Character

To make things easier and more uniform, we use Templates throughout this Kanka page. We ask that when you create your Pilot, please navigate to the Characters link and click on the down-arrow box next to the + Character box and choose Player Character Template. This will generate a page with the structure for much of the information you might want to store on Kanka regarding your Pilot. Be sure to fill out the Entry, Traits, Organisations (if applicable) and Attributes tabs.

After saving your character, you may want to update the Connections and Organisations sections to better reflect your Pilot's relationships with other PC and NPCs, as well as their membership in an existing Organisation.

Assets

This is a section you can use to link to other, external documents such as your Pilot Book stored in Google sheets. If you created your character using the template, a link will be here that you can follow to your campaign's default Campaign Book. You should see a tab at the bottom that corresponds to your character. if not, reach out to a Game Master and they'll get you added, and permissions squared away.

Attributes

If you wish to store more information in Kanka about your Pilot, the Attributes section can hold much of the information that would normally be on the Pilot Playbook. Kanka is a wonderful resource for storing any information about your Pilot, but the Campaign Playbook Google Sheet has both more space and more detailed information and serves as the official system of record for Pilot stats.

Inventory

This is the link to important Items to your character, most notably your Vehicle. When you're ready to create your Vehicle, navigate to the Items link on the Left and again clock the down-arrow next to + Item and choose Vehicle Template.

Creating your Vehicle

You'll see the term AWV (Armored Walker Vehicle, pronounced ah-vee) used interchangeably with Vehicle. While many AWVs no longer 'walk', but instead fly, hover, etc., the acronym has become a catch-all in the setting for any war-like vehicle, with the acronym CWV (Civilian Walker Vehicle, pronounced see-vee) used for anything else.

Creating your AWV follows the same pattern as Creating Your Pilot above. We strongly recommend using the Vehicle Template. If you have any issues with the process, please reach out to a GM for assistance.

Journals

Some players will find it exciting and rewarding to write Journals about their character's experiences. Please use the following guidelines when possible.

  • Type: Use a short phrase to indicate if this is a Mission Recap, Character's Personal Journal, etc. When possible, use the same Type that a previous player has used, which should appear as drop-down when you click in that field.
  • Parent: Please select the name of the current Campaign
  • Date: Use today's date
  • Author: Pick your Pilot. If multiple players worked on a Journal involving multiple Pilots, select one of the pilots here and a GM can assist linking the Journal to all related Pilots if desired.
  • Location: Useful if you want your Journal Entry to auto-link to an existing Location in the setting, such as your Squad's base. Not always necessary.
  • Tags: Please select an existing tag or reach out to a GM if you feel new Tags are needed.
  • Image: Useful if you want an image to serve as the thumbnail for your post or display some unique item.
