Iorangi Kai hails from the Coral-controlled city of Brightwork, where most of his early life was spent training and working as a scribe. He joined the Tya at a fairly young age, more for personal comfort than societal pressure, but after an encounter with a visiting noble from Azure went very, very poorly Iorangi found it necessary to get as from from his homeland as he could, and quickly. Unfortunately Iorangi's demon-tainted bloodline, the same thing that had earned him the ire of the visiting nobleman, caused him to be turned away from nearly a dozen ships before he finally talked his way into a position aboard the Blackfish, a vessel already crewed by more than its fair share of oddities.
Initially Iorangi served as an assistant to the Sailing Master; he had a knack with maps and enough navigation and weather-reading skills to make up for his purely theoretical knowledge of sailing and the fact that he barely knew which end of the sword to hold when conflict broke out. When the ancient and cantankerous former Sailing Master finally retired Iorangi tentatively accepted his election to the position. Despite holding the posission successfully for several months now he is as nervous and unsure of himself as he was the day he first set foot on the ship.
His demonic blood, inherited from an Angyalkae ancestor several generations back, shows most obviously in his hands; Iorangi's fingers are unusually long and often bend in strange ways when he isn't paying attention to them. He tends to keep them shoved in his pockets. Less often witnessed is the strange effects music he plays has on those who listen to it. Though far less pronounced than the effects of an Angyalkae's song any music he preforms seems to reach into the hearts of those who hear it and amplify any emotions that have a particularly strong hold on them in the moment. As sailors are often not the cheeriest lot his lyre tends to collect a lot of dust.
