EB-02: Voice in the Machine

Session

It's been a week since the Saviours of Salvation officially formed, during which time Isabelle has "tuned up" Jasmine Glayder and Elloven's weapons, Jinx has been busier than usual with the paperwork for her hospital. Elloven seems troubled by a strange "tick" around his thigh, but assures the others it's no problem. Khetari, meanwhile, has been literally just vibing and helping around the Chapel, her small bird-spirit-thing constantly flitting around her.

As everyone settles down and catches up, an orc enters the tavern and puts up a notice on the board, from Belaluur, asking for help locating the Grey Dogs -- a missing salvage crew, which Aliza has been running with lately. Panicked for their friend's safety, the squad rushes to the market to see the broker and her daughter Garundah, who've been giving some of them Goblin lessons since the last time they met. Belaluur mentions that the Gray Dogs were sent out to Kalazart, eighty miles into the Mournland to scout the ruins of the Fireweave Bazaar. She offers the party fifty galifars for either their safe return or proof of their deaths, and Garundah hands out free potions of clairvoyance to everyone.

Entering the Mournland, the group finds themselves subject to the strange wild magic permeating the region. Isabelle's clothes and equipments grow over with a mossy fungus, Elloven suddenly ages a little, and Glayder is constantly haunted by the words "I'm sorry" circling around her head and repeating themselves. Khetari continues to literally just vibe, wondering what the big deal about this wild magic is. The trip takes longer than expected, to the point where they're afraid they might be too late, but they catch sight of a map signpost next to the Bazaar, with a few rooms crossed out and circled.

They decide to use the markings on the map to their advantage, presuming them to be the Dogs' exploration route, and head to Carpet Realm first. Upon entering, they see a lot of rugs and carpets sprawled out haphazardly, as well as the corpse of Tandal Khan lying near the entrance. Glayder steps in, and the rug she's standing on animates, threatening to suffocate her, but it's quickly dispatched before it can do much of anything. On Tandal's body, Isabelle finds some healing potions and a scrap of paper with "39238" on it.

Next, they move on to the Dragon's Hoard. The baubles and trinkets in this store are surprisingly well preserved and organised, considering the Mourning hit it. Isabelle has a look around and finds Nimble, a little silver pseudodragon, sleeping peacefully on a shelf. She accidentally scares the poor critter, but Khetari intervenes and calms him down so much he offers to come with her as a familiar. Jinx seems doubtful, but after confirming that Nimble's original owner died in the Mourning, offers to help him out. He insists on staying to sort out his hoard before leaving with Khetari.

They then break into an old Cannith maintenance closet and find some funky animated brooms, and move on to a store labeled Grand Attire, where a suit of animated armour tries to sell them clothing. The suit doesn't seem to realise it's 998 YK and appears to be frozen in time -- and fashion trends -- right before the Mourning. Still, Jinx finds an almost perfectly preserved glamerweave dress that fits her well, and Elloven takes it for her when the construct isn't looking.

Approaching a dried up fountain at the end of the hallway, they find themselves in a hall of mirrors and illusory billboards, which must have once looked magnificent but now seem stale and cracked due to the devastation of the area. One such illusion repeats ad infinitum, "Welcome to the Fireweave Bazaar. Your attire is our..." Isabelle finishes the phrase with "desire", and is prompted to ask about a "special deal", which she does. Her mirror reflection leads the party towards a ruined hair salon, where most of the equipment is dusty and unusable, but Jinx finds a single white rose on a cabinet. Isabelle identifies it as a rare Orioth rose from the jungles of Aerenal

Heading past the hall of mirrors, Isabelle spots a warforged crouching behind a nearby balcony. They immediately flee when they are seen. The party chases them to the main plaza, across from a Sivis message station and a perfumery named Musk, only to find a group of nine more warforged. All of them act condescendingly towards the party, describing them as "flesh bags" and the Mourning as "a resolution" to the Last War. There's a brief fight, during which a few arrows are shot at the warforged from the direction of the message station, and all of them are dispatched easily.

The party enters the message station, hoping to find their friends alive and well, and runs into Aliza, Sprocket, and Nella Halthorn. All three look exhausted, and sad to learn of Tandal's fate, though worried about the one member of their group that isn't accounted for. Just as this happens, though, the floor begins to shake and cave in, as an enormous iron juggernaut smashes through the plaza, crewed by a small army of warforged raiders. Everyone in the message station falls through the floor and into a hidden basement.

Inside said basement is a strange box -- the Oracle of War. It seems to be repeating itself ad nauseum: "Define enemy forces". With Aliza's help, Glayder and Jinx puzzle their way through the numerous dials and knobs on the device, eventually feeding it data about the battle conditions, terrain, and allied and enemy numbers. A few mechanical birds emerge from it and flit about the bazaar, returning in a few moments as a spool of parchment rolls out of the box with surprisingly sound strategic advice on it. The group decides to split up to act on this advice.

Jinx and Aliza head to the Bolts and Tumblers store to retrieve Durvo Tellis, using the code found on Tandal's body to unlock the safe he'd hidden in. Glayder and Nella lead some of the warforged through the Hall of Illusions, successfully distracting them for a few minutes. Sprocket and Isabelle go to a shop labeled Hounds of Barrakas, pick out a couple steel defenders, and use them to lure the juggernaut into the hole in the Sivis station's floor. Elloven and Khetari struggle a little, but make it back to the main thoroughfare to retrieve Nimble and help the party regroup.

Upon trying to leave, they are ambushed by two groups of warforged: one that was in the Hall of Illusions, and one from out front. Thanks to all the assistance the party has, both from the Dogs and the literal metal dogs, the fight goes by fairly easily, and they're able to escape the bazaar with the funny box in tow. They find a place to camp out before starting on the journey back to Salvation.
