If a melee attack reduces a creature to 0 hit points, any excess damage from that attack can carry over to another creature within reach. If the original attack roll can hit it any remaining damage applies to it. If that creature was damaged and is likewise reduced to 0 hit points, repeat this process, until there are no valid targets, or until it fails to reduce a creature to 0 hit points.
