A glowing orb of crackling lightning energy is embedded in the body of this bolt. When this bolt hits a target, the lightning ball glows brighter as if looking for a connection.

When you hit a target with this magical bolt, the target takes an extra 1d6 lightning damage and the bolt remains lodged in the target for 1 hour. A creature can use an action to remove a lodged bolt within 5 feet of it.
Closed Circuit. The first time a lodged bolt is within 20 feet of another lodged bolt, a bolt of lightning 5 feet wide arcs between both bolts, and both bolts disintegrate. Each creature in this line must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 3d6 lightning damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful one. If the lodged bolt was in a creature when it disintegrates, that creature must also make this save.
Rare Variant
The bolt instead deals an extra 2d6 lightning damage on a hit. Closed Circuit instead activates when two lodged bolts are within 30 feet of each other, and its lightning damage increases to 5d6.
