(S28) Surviving the Tempest

Session
June 29, 2023

The heroes found themselves surrounded on all sides as orcs and the more powerful anchorites battled their way into Falcon's Lodge along with the [massive] thunder boar, Gorthok.  They had positioned themselves throughout the place, with Zenari and Pine to the north, Idris and Falcon to the west, and Siax and Barolt to the south.  Things were not looking good for our intrepid heroes due to the forces being brought to bear against them.

Despite this, one by one the orcs were felled.  Some by Pine's spiritual guardians, Idris's lightning and sword, Siax's arrows, and Falcon's swords.  Zenari also dealt devastating blows to the anchorites in the north, her magic still going haywire from the surge of chaos energy in her.  One of the anchorites attempted to flee after speaking to another powerful orc chieftain, but [player] brought them down before they could leave.

It was not easy, especially not with the massive boar charging them all time after time.  Siax managed to lure it away from Pine when he would not have survived another attack by it, and dashed to a building as far away as possible, but it was not enough.  The boar charged him, and just when things seemed dire for the ranger, Idris moved and challenged the boar to a dual, his paladin's voice filled with the power of his God.  The boar turned and charged Idris, and in doing so felled several orcs and the ogre behind him.  Siax's arrows pelted it, killing it, but it just kept going, its body still moving despite the fatal blows.  Idris fell, but Pine was able to stagger over and revive him having been revived by [player] earlier in the fight after massive damage from [monster].  Pine's state was short lived, however, as the last orcs managed to get a lucky hit, felling him, before being taken down themselves.  Zenari attempted to help, but the wild chaos magic backfired, turning her into a horse, which bolted and ran.

Only one orc remained.  An orc that had caught his foot in Siax's hunting trap and then having been tossed in the river, finally managed to drag himself out the other side just before drowning.  Siax's arrow flew across the river and stopped him in his tracks.  None of the attackers survived. All was once more quiet in Falcon's Lodge, or what was left of it.  The place was mere rubble compared to the fortified place of only minutes before.  Searching through the rubble, Falcon was able to find a heavily fortified bottle of alcohol that had curative effects, and fed it to Pine, who was revived, if blindingly drunk.

The group got together, very heavily wounded but alive, and tried to decide what to do now.  Siax made a start on skinning the boar while Pine drunkenly talked to him about having seen death, however the conversation took a sharp turn when Zenari didn't immediately come back, and Pine could sense the dragon in the direction she ran.  Siax's immediate response to go after her was met by a firm stand-off with Pine who saw it as a suicide mission and refused to go.  Both Siax and Falcon went to try and find her, while Idris sent Effie to go ahead and search in a raven form, while Pine, still drunk and barely clinging to life, stayed and put the dead to rest.

Meanwhile Zenari had been fleeing through the forest, her intellect curtailed by her current form and the constant chaos magic further altering her, making her an invisible, super fast horse dashing through the forest.  Although this let her avoid the notice of the various predators there, it also made finding her more difficult.  However Effie did manage to succeed, and understanding magic, landed on her, changing shape to something that had some minor damage, and shocked Zenari out of the shapeshift she had been in.  Together they headed back towards Falcon's Lodge, with Zenari turning herself into a giant eagle to speed the journey.  This did not go unnoticed, however, for the dragon saw the perfect meal.  With a perfectly executed dive, Zenari, with Effie on her back, managed to avoid the dragon's teeth, and flew off unscathed.

It wasn't too long before the pair found Siax and Falcon in the forest, neither of them having been able to be stealthy enough to avoid detection, and carefully she carried them back to the ruins of Falcon's lodge where the group was once more reunited. Deciding that staying at the ruins was not wise, they followed Falcon's directions to a small hut deeper in the forest.  It was said to be haunted but safe.  The group settled down in the hut to heal from their wounds and recover from their trying day.
