(QW06) Not So Silent Night

RP

DM
You are sleeping in a tavern - you are traveling alone. You wake hearing the room door that you locked creak open. How do you react?

(Feel free to be as detailed [spells used, things readied] or as vague as you want)

Effie

Effie

Effie would cast Invisibility, hide in a corner, and just watch and wait to see what happens next.

[if there was time for all that of course, otherwise just roll off the bed and hide under the bed]

DM

[Love the order, just eyes open, invisibility. I will challenge one thing, invisibility has all components so you'll have to say the magic words alerting whoever it is - does that change your decision?]

Effie

[Hmmm, she'd probably risk it. It gives her a chance to control the situation. If it's an attacker they have disadvantage on finding and attacking her (?) or they would have to spend an action to dispel the magic. The probability of it being someone that has active See Invisibility or blindsight/devil sight isn't that high... Right? ]

DM

[Just for fun give me a d100 and a stealth check with advantage whenever you want xD]

[Also love the Effie sleeps with her components handy - super in character imo]

Effie

[Her rapier is her spell focus, of course she has it right there under the pillow ]

[Rolled on DndBeyond: d100 => 38, Stealth => Nat20 + 13 = 33]

DM

[The unseen assailants entered and found nothing but an untidy bed. Cursing they quickly looked around and then spoke to each other planning their next move - while also spilling everything to the hidden Effie. Beyond lying on an uncomfortable wooden floor no harm had befallen her... And now she knew who she had to pay a visit to.]

Pine

Pine

Travelling was by no means uncommon for Pine, but staying in a tavern overnight was.  He tended to prefer staying away from the living where possible, but sometimes the lure of a hot meal and a little extra comfort was too great.

But for all that Pine enjoyed these relatively mundane luxuries, that was what they were.  He did not need to eat or sleep, only let himself lapse into a sort of trance-like state, still aware of what went on around him.  And so it was that when the lock on his door clicked open it did not find him deep in slumber.

An intake of breath, slow but deep, would bring him the minutiae of who was at the door, and if it was a stranger -- and it would be, for he was travelling alone this time -- he would let out a low growl, holding back none of the unearthly timbre to the sound that he usually attempted to when interacting with others.  It was a warning for whomever was attempting to gain entry into his room, that he was both aware and hostile to such an attempt.  He didn't need to grasp for weapons, or light a candle to see, and if they chose to enter despite that warning, and without further announcing themselves, he would rouse himself from the laxity of his evening and deal with the situation in a more determined way.

DM

[In this case the assailant(s) has a steely disposition and enters despite the warning. What do they encounter?]

Pine

[It would depend on whether Pine recognised them, whether they came in armed etc. Either way he would be at least sitting up, covers thrown off, by the time they came in more fully]

DM

[Brigands, ruffians, vagabonds. Not associated with anyone behind accepting coin for your head]

Pine

Seeing that his rest was to be more decidedly impinged upon, he would stand and, having already given a warning, draw upon the power granted to him, having already made note of those staying in the rooms either side of him, just in case of such an occurrence.

Throughout the room and beyond it into the opening where the knives for hire were standing, a chilled mist formed in the air, deathly fingers, screaming faces; a tangible aura of the beyond, and one that was hungry to decmiate those who would do the cleric harm.

There might have been a time when Pine would have attempted to talk them down first, but he had already given a warning, and he had little patience for people even on good days.  He did not hold back, not when a swift end of at least one would make others question their decision.  That, and he wasn't quite as sturdy, considering he had wanted to rest well, and one could not do that in plate armour.

Idris

Idris

Knowing for sure he had locked the Door Idris would grab his sword that he always has placed next to his bed, activate his Divine Sense (which I totally didn't just now remember he had) and ready an action: Speak with unknown first maybe they're friends.

DM

[Paid thugs, intending to end your life. What do you say and give me a persuasion roll!] @Idris Doryu (Kiziro)

Idris

Idris simply deducts for himself that they're most likely here for money, having specifically targeted him as he is a Doryu. Wether that is correct or not Idris does not question.

"Hey, we're all fellow humans under the same realm are we not? Why Fight if instead we can help each other? More Kindness in the world could change so much. Let's talk it out"

[Persuasion roll: 22]

DM

[The bandits look at each other suddenly unsure. One of them, seemingly makes a decision and steps forward. "Slag it, someone paid us to take you out but I'd be damned if I attack someone wielding that." He doesn't quite look at Eefie, a wicked sharp sword to most but hiding a malevolence within that could be sensed by even the somewhat perceptive, as he points to it. "Do good by us and I'll tell you all I know."

Idris

Idris nods in approval rummaging through his pocket to find 5 gold coins, flipping one of them towards them.

"5 easy gold coins for talking. No bloodshed. Talk"

He would say rather nonchalant seemingly uninterested although with a serious undertone, yet all that he is doing is trying to look cool, though they don't know that.  Understanding that they are scared of Eefie Idris casually ignites the sword thinking it would make him look even cooler and imposing. [D20: 18].

DM

[And so it went, the Paladin and his trusty blade turned what would have been a slaughter into some information gathering instead. Idris now knew who he had to pay a visit to.... He only hoped they would be open to talking when he got there.]

Arya

Arya

Arya not sleeping but sitting on her bed in her trance would open her eyes and look at the door.  Realizing someone isn't knocking but forcing the door open she would cast fire shield on herself but stay in the same seated position on the bed and just wait.

DM

[Those same bandits as above enter. Seeing you watch them causes them to hesitate but it appears they will strike soon. @Arya (Sandra)]

Arya

Arya would camly ask them what they are doing in her room and if they move towards her she will summon her wild fire spirit to a point where most of them will be hit by its fire

Siax

DM

[Siax was never in the inn to begin with, having scouted, found an appropriate hill with decent vantage spots, and is currently in a forest camouflage sleeping bag]

[Sleeping but so many arrow traps]

Tiaumil

Tiaumil would not be surprised or caught unawares by the would-be intruders.  He always sets an alarm spell up no matter where he sleeps, but especially not in a place such as a roadside tavern.

With a soft sigh, not having been asleep, he would get up and merely wait for the door to open and the common bandit types rushed into his room.  They didn't take him unawares, and it had been a while since he'd had any opportunity to truly get in any practice with certain spells.  And so it was with a smile that seemed to unsettle the people that he stepped up close to them all, black sweeping up over his form until it lashed out in inky tendrils that decimated them in seconds.

Looking down at the fallen, he would rifle through their belongings but find nothing of interest.  With a sigh at the general smell, he looked to the one out of the three who had somehow clung to life.  A gesture and a few words from his lips and those eyes glazed over slightly.

"Take what remains of your companions out of my room and do not bother me again."

He watched dispassionately as the man struggled up from the ground, battered and barely clinging to life, but able enough when motivated.  Tiaumil had seen to that.  It wasn't long until he was alone in his room once more.  What a tedious interlude.
