The gang wakes up in a covered wagon that is also a train car
The three heroes Delphinium, Hannah, and Thornstrider Osbourne are all stuck in familiar prisons. Del is potted in soil, Hannah is in a mirror, and Thorn is inside a taxidermy.
A goblin figure interrupts escape with its presence, a candle in its hand. Thorn attacks the goblin who drops his candle before being thrown outside of the wagon.
Hannah uses her Mercurial Visage to transform into the goblin and walks to the front,
The driver, a man made of smoke, asks what was going on. Hannah just shrugs.
There is a great thorny desert, ahead of her she can see what she will discover later is the hedge. The hedge is freedom.
Del moves, and attempts flattery at the driver. Hannah uses this moment to snatch the reigns. She also tries to push him off, but fails. Thorn arrives and the driver eventually jumps off the wagon. He holds on for a little while but falls away.
The gang rides until the boar mount hauling the wagon passes out. The group retrieves him, and they set off towards the hedge proper.
