The nationwide conference of members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters drew about ten times its normal attendance in 2036, due to massive adoption of Automated Vehicles in their industries. The convention was unruly from the beginning due to existing anger about the Federal Selective Service Act of 2034. To the Teamsters, they felt the nation had told them they weren't good enough to drive at home, but they were disposable enough to drive in warzones. The - surprisingly benign - truth is that the US Military had not yet become fully comfortable with self-driving technology due to the complexity of tactical maneuver required of a driver in a warzone. Many of the attendees were injured and/or angry veterans discharged early from the war who understood that truth but did not feel it exonerated the country from its failures and fuckeries.

They didn't want to take over the country, only space where they could manage their own affairs since it seemed the US was failing domestically due to the war effort. These were resourceful people, often having worked in other trades and who appreciated the hard work of building something for a community. They had all the elements to work for a functioning community, but were barred from doing so by the economy.
