Literally, "Roper."

Derived from Cordillerero, Spanish for "Person of the Cordillera." As the name was a mouthful even for Spanish speakers, the name mutated to match the original etymology of Cordillera, cuerda (rope).

Cuerderos are generally independent and hardy people who live along the The American Cordillera, forming a loose network of guides, vigilantes, survivalists, and bandits.

Their tendency toward vigilante action has neatly dovetailed with their name, as it is not uncommon for bad actors in the Cordillera to be lynched as punishment.
