The 9/11 ritual was an attempt to preserve the threatened symbols of American global hegemony and bolster belief in American Civil Religion. By destroying one of these symbols, the ritual served to move it into the abstract of human memory before it could be abjured. There it remained, associated with the desired aspects of national exceptionalism and myths of imperial benevolence.
