Munoyik (Chalice Cap)

Fungus

An enormous, sturdy mushroom that forms a bowl shape in its cap, inverting in the winter.

Physiology

Development

Munoyik can grow indefinitely in the right conditions. The largest are capable of functioning as Muosikai.

It orients its growth primarily through gravitropism, finding purchase on a surface and growing directly upwards most of the time. If the surface is inclined greater than 90 degrees, it will instead develop with gravity, forming the same structure but upside down. The Chalice is functional either way, but may be inverted.

Thermonasty

When temperature drops near freezing, the Munoyik inverts the concavity of its cap accordingly, shedding the water it once held. It enters a metabolic stasis until warmth returns, suggesting the species dates back to the Great Boduan Ice Age.

Distribution & Habitat

Munoyik are found in the warmer latitudes, becoming somewhat scarce in areas where they would spend more than half their time in stasis.

As a Habitat

Munoyik have symbiotic relationships with much of the fauna of Bodue. The mushroom serves as a watering hole, and in return digests the effluence of the creatures that use it.
