Finishing is the process of protecting exposed flesh by various methods. 

Lacquer

Applying a specialized lacquer will prevent growth if the wood is still alive, a preferred method for highly articulated forms.

Bark Cultivation

Cultivating new bark is the surest way to protect the health of the tree. This can be done naturally through scoring, which may include decorative patterns that show through to the new bark. Alternatively, one may treat the exposed sapwood with a specialized liniment that encourages bark growth but halts sapwood growth. A combination of both techniques is generally used for decorative work.
