A hundred years ago, people wrote "novels" and made "films" that were alarmingly predictive of how far our technology has come. We have reasonably reliable bionics, for the right price. Semi-reliable ones for cheaper. Bioneural implantation and linkage is fairly commonplace. Home and vehicle technologies are similarly advanced. Most of them can be operated manually if desired, but default to simple task-oriented AI programming that is designed to adapt to user preferences and carry out its tasks in an efficient and unobtrusive manner.
Robotics (as opposed to bionics) so far remains primarily task-oriented. Most robotics are found in construction, manufacturing, research, and other large-scale industries, although there are some consumer robotics products available (i.e. home sanitation units, home security units). All of these operate on the aforementioned task-oriented AI.
Full-scale AI is a real thing, however. But no one in their right mind would put one in something that can move under its own power. That’s just asking for trouble. Full-scale AI, complete with configurable voice, personality, and holo-avatar, is for smart-residences and Corp buildings. You gotta have money or deep dirt on somebody to afford a real AI.
Interest in transhumanism runs the gamut. At one end, there’s New Atlantis: they’d probably kick you out if you had metal dentures. On the other, Clockwork Mobius, who’d be thrilled if everyone was a brain in a shiny steel drum…and they’re not sure about the brain, either. Most people are somewhere in the middle, but honestly, as time passes it gets harder and harder to make a buck in the world without some kind of enhancement, so…
Bionics is the bread and butter of Clockwork Mobius, and the full-scale AIs come from a subsidiary of Green Fairy. The robotics is an interesting thing: the Corp that produces the hardware and the AIs they run on is called Golden Spark. No one knows who founded the thing, no one knows who the head of the Board is. But that’s alright, because the Board members themselves are more than happy to tell you all about the company’s newest product.
