- Almost a year has past and folk are settling the village of Slyriver once more.
- Ern, Ralam and Nilrith all arrive at the Faithful Tankard, once the village's church of Gede. Curiosity has brought them back to their old home.
- They get talking to a Dwarf named Zorm about the village and learn that he is a mercenary of the Divine Explorers, hired by the village's Burgomeister Kieren, to protect the settlement. He wants to play a dice game with them called Wizards and Thieves, but none are willing to gamble.
- A man spits out stew after finding a fish with a malformed arm. Zorm tells the party that Voraga, a Half-Orc fisher in Slyriver, keeps catching strange, misshapen fish.
- Ern overhears a woman speak of some travellers arriving from Wardenwood in the Gloaming, they saw a ruined outpost by the road, and said something about old knights.
- Ralam devises a plan to rob the Burgomeister, especially if he's a well off Elf who can sling around money on mercenaries that spend most of their time drinking.
- In further talks with Zorm, Nilrith reveals that he is a newly appointed Brother of the Knights of St. Ydris, and Ralam reveals he was in Slyriver when the Red Cap Ravagers attacked.
- Zorm tells the party of the inn that they can stay at. Ern and Nilrith go with him, while Ralam scopes out the Burgomeister's manor house.
- After knocking on the Burgomeister's house and casting Hold Portal on the door, an old man opens a viewing hatch and informs that Kieren is away on business. Ralam gives Nilrith's name when he states that he will leave a message for the Burgomeister the following day.
- Once gathered back at the Darkwood Inn, Zorm has paid for their room as a thanks for the entertainment of new faces in the village. He asks them to ignore the stains, as they later find old dark blood stains soaked into the floorboards of the inn.
