The Order Repentiae are a reclusive order of Paladins who follow the war god Gan Caenn, and are the only religious group to formally do so. Its members are convicted perpetrators of particularly heinous crimes (torture, cannibalism, slavery etc.) who show genuine remorse and wish to redeem themselves; as to not annoy the Spirit of Vengeance, they do this through acts of self-flagellation and suicidal acts of bravery. Anyone who joins this Order usually has no real choices other than execution or life imprisonment but does it of their own free will, and fully expects to die in the course of their time with the Order - and most do die, and extremely violently at that, to the point where joining the Order Repentiae is directly seen as suicide by most.
The Paladins leave the Order if they either die or are, in the eyes of the Gods, redeemed for their heinous crimes. Even if they do get out alive, they will for the rest of their lives bear a mark of their time as a Repenter and of their crimes - upon becoming a Repenter, the tenets of the Order are, without any form of anaesthetic, carved into the back of the new recruit with a knife.
