Ruby is a precious gemstone variety of the mineral corundum. Specifically, it is red corundum as other colours of the same mineral are referred to as Sapphire. Pink coloured corundum may be either classified as ruby or sapphire depending on locale. Commonly, natural rubies are cut and polished into gemstones and worn in jewellery.
