Hengvid's Hold

On the surface, Hengvind's Hold appears little more than a Dwarven outpost, with its temple to the Twin Dwarven gods, it's market, and few shops. But against the rocky face of the Ancestor Mountains, it marks the entrance to the Longdark Road, a series of tunnels that span the entire range of the eastern mountains.

The Hengvind Clan has held these lands for almost a thousand years, being the initial miners that carved much of the road from the capital of Fangrim to the south, creating a trade network along the King's Highway which they call the Golden Road. Once finished and rewarded handsomely by the Dwarvenqueen Olsta (mother of King Uli), Anvar Hengvind settled and took his riches to develop the trading town that still stands. Underground, a long series of winding ramps leads to the primary village to the south and the opening to the Main Longdark to the North.

Few but the dwarves have visited beneath and there is a treacherous but navigable overland path that the non-dwarves use called the Greyknife Passage. Travelers often use the topside village of Henvind's Hold to rest and prepare as they must wait for the gates to the passage to open; an hour after sunrise and closed just before the evening meal. Fortunately, there is a very comfortable inn called The Stonecrossing with four long halls converging on a cramped, but comfortable common room.  And for those just looking to put down some courage, there's the Two Barrels Above pub.
