Details

Many years after the Master disappeared, Dendronaos (the Temple Tree) fell, and the Faeries were forced to undertake a massive exodus. Tsar Oberon Trismegistus, led his Folk through the Great Window and to the Dining Hall, where they founded the Realm.

The lands of the Realm include the Dining Hall and the Kitchen, and they are mostly inhabited by Faeries. The capital is Astraviya, the crystal city founded on the Highlight Chandelier.

It is organized as a hereditary monarchy, led by Tsarina Arcadia Oberonovna, who also holds the prestigious title of Ruling Empress of the Household.

The national motto of the Realm is Custodire et Capere (To Protect and Conquer), and it also appears on the banner of the Golden Backs. The national language is Fae.

Customs and Traditions

Littlings born in the Realm lead a peaceful life, far from most dangers. The nation’s pride, the Great Imperial Army, attend promptly to any sign of insect invasions, and keep banditry in check.

Members of the upper class and minor nobility can all rely on a residence and a steady passive income, allowing them to live comfortably among luxuries. Many less fortunate than them live in complete poverty, in the shadow of the Table or in dark Unter. The excesses of the nobility cause a steep disparity among social classes that weighs heavily on entire towns where littlings are forced to live hand to mouth on the very edge of legality, only dreaming of a better life among the shiny walls of Highlight.

Setting the extremes aside, most subjects of the Realm lead very decent lives, if often marred by a feeling of dissatisfaction. The myth of life at court is ever-present in the minds of citizens: they dream of honors and riches, and end up valuing their career and social standing above all else.

Families of the Realm usually impose a very strict education on their children. Notably, etiquette is considered a cardinal subject of study. Boys are often brought up for military life, one of the leading sectors of the Realm thanks to the prestigious Glasburg Academy. Alternatively, they can pursue a career in academia at one of the many prominent universities in Astraviya and Tournoire. On the other hand, girls are most often trained to value beauty, elegance, and courtesy above all. They are taught that their highest aspiration in life should be to marry up, gaining favor with this or that courtier, and elevating their families’ status.

Ceremonies in the Realm

The Realm has always set the standard for appropriate pomp, and it is the chosen destination for many celebrations.

Birthdays

On these occasions, they spare no expense to ensure that their guest have the best, most unique, and exotic experience. This tradition is also taken up by all aspiring nobles, some of whom squander their entire fortune in a – most often futile – attempt to be on par with high Fae society.

Of all the birthdays in the life of a citizen of the Realm, the most important is certainly the sixteenth, marking their entrance into adulthood. At that age many young littlings leave their family home to venture in the world and go to the academy, or to university.

And on this ever-so-special occasion there are many traditions to uphold, some shared, some family specific. Firstly, the littling turning sixteen should pay a visit to the oldest member of their family, traveling to wherever they may be in the Realm or the House, and share a feast with them.

Secondly, they have to sit for a portrait, which will be added to a gallery of all their family portraits, and handed down through the generations. Then, they have to take the time to write a heart-felt and poetic letter of thanks to their parents, one they’ll have to give a very emphatic reading of in front of all guests.

Other than that, the birthday-littling usually has to perform a dance and, if they’re going on to a military career, challenge someone to a duel, or accept the first gauntlet thrown down.

To uphold all the traditions, sometimes the celebrations last for more than a week, during which the birthday-littling must always be dressed up to the nines, must never eat alone, and must always pay the bill for everyone at their table.

Weddings

Let us begin by saying that the citizens of the Realm look at marriage like a form of contract that never gets formalized, as such it can always be rescinded without falling afoul of any Terrible Terrible Thing worse than an angry spouse. Quite the opposite it is all around seen as improper to ask for a littling to tie themselves indissolubly to another through the counterpart of their Hereditary Contract.

Fae tradition sees marriage as a union between two littlings who commit to their union and their children and their relatives much like the stars unite to form constellations, each of them becoming a beacon for the others.

A surname carries much weight in the Realm, as all assets and titles belonging to the family are tied to it. As such, weddings are seen as a way for families to unite and forge alliances, to share their respective power and build foundations for what is, hopefully, a new step in the social climb of the family.

Funerals

The funeral ceremony of the winged Folk is also known as “the Return to the Stars” as it promises to lead the departed upward to the sky where they can rejoin the light of the stars. As part of the last rites, the body of the deceased is cremated and their ashes placed in an urn made of an extremely thin material, like spider web, butterfly cocoons, or honey film. In this urn they enclose a tiny seed, which blooms and gives birth to a special kind of flower, a white dandelion clock still holding the urn among its roots. When the flower develops, those who loved the deceased place a small light within the now-empty urn and on the first clear night, they let the dandelion take flight so that it may find its way to the Stars without getting lost.

It can only take place in Faeriyev, where there’s a special window in the sugar-glass panes, created to allow dandelions to leave the House.

Armed Forces

The Royal Gendarmerie is the operational police force within the Realm. Gendarmes are identified by their green blazers and the traditional pointy boots. They tend to be duty-driven, following a code of conduct that mandates a stern and detached attitude.

The Great Imperial Army is the main military body of the Realm, historically known as an example of discipline, competence, and order. Following the Astraviya Treaty, as ordered by the High Council, soldiers of this military patrol all territories of the House, and act above other national armies.

The elite corp of the Great Imperial Army are called the Golden Backs, or “blond knights” (after the feathers on their helms). This contingent is entirely made up of Faeries who wear a prestigious armor made with the hard forewings of golden chafer beetles that allow them to fly into battle. The leaders of this elite squadron are the Captains of the Golden Backs.

The regular training period at the academy lasts for 2 years and 3 years for sentries.
