Halfings have a close-knit agrarian culture. They are known to be simple farmers overwhelmingly. Halfling culture emphasizes humility and acceptance of one's lot as pinnacle virtues. The desire to be something you are not, or to leave the village, or to become educated, is to be subject to scorn. Actually doing pretty much anything that stands out is subject of scorn, and the constant whispering rumors which flit around incessantly in halfling culture. For those who are content with it, it is peace and harmony. Neighbors look out for neighbors, everyone has a place. You get married, farm the land, and live on to old age. But standing out even in the slightest means becoming a pariah, not (usually) in a vindictive way, but in a constant oppressive surge of whispers and side eyes that persists until the deviation ceases. Some infractions, though, can not be overlooked. Amongst these are learning to read and excessive fraternization with outsiders. Hospitality is expected, but nothing more. Punishment for these extreme crimes go up to stoning, which is illegal under Both church and imperial law yet persists in isolated rural halfling communities. Halflings have an advanced oral culture with great emphasis on music and stories. They are known to have a holiday every week, and their celebrations involve singing, dancing, and feasting and are open to any who wish to join. Halflings are also deeply superstitious, and turn to fey in times of strong adversity which are paradoxically both to be feared and yet turned to out of desperation. Most changelings are halflings for this reason, though a changeling halfling (or one who just so happens to have heterochromia, or occasionally just those that are left handed) can expect to be exiled, or if they are feared to be dangerous or vindictive, killed. Halflings traditionally use Spanish names.
