It is widely known that the servants of the moon god Eir have a strong compulsion to steal children. When these children are stolen away, they usually end up in the possession of a hag, a humanoid warped by the moon god’s horrible influence and turned into monsters. Sometimes these children are eaten, but if they are not then among the first things a hag does with a child is to replace their left eye with a new one, and it is this new eye that visibly separates a changeling from others. After enduring the maniac torments of a hag, a child who does not escape will ultimately molt, being restructured into a true hag. Fragments of the mind and personality survive this process, but are warped by madness into twisted mockeries of themselves. This process is not reversible. Changelings who manage to flee or be freed from their had captors usually face a number of difficulties. The superstitious, particularly amongst rural communities, are typically not welcomed back. Amongst urban communities the stories may be disbelieved and the child accused of fabrication. Often changelings return to find their families gone, and have to survive in the world themselves. The lucky are found by certain orders of Vannaran druids, who guide them and provide them with homes.
