Lords and Legacies (4ROSES) - S01 E01

Session
June 19, 2024

The campaign begins in the year 1632 ADM on the 16th day of Samah. The players, all old friends of Lord Therald from his days as a prince, have been invited to the castle of Eldar in the small village surrounding it. Deimos, a half-elf paladin with blonde hair, clad in chainmail armor, bearing a shield and longsword, arrives first at the castle's gate. Soon after, he is joined by Roken, a Tiefling Rogue with purple skin, red eyes, and red horns growing backward, dressed in dark clothes. Following them is Celine, a half-elf Bard in a tight black suit, carrying two lutes. As the gates open, the trio is greeted by Aelar, the half-elf chancellor of Therald and his right-hand man, the most important member of the council. Inside, they find another old friend waiting, Caelum Valandor II, an Aasimar Fighter. Together, they proceed to the throne hall where they are warmly welcomed by Therald. They share a grand lunch, during which Therald reveals that his precious heirloom, the coin of Egador, has been stolen. He trusts his old friends to retrieve the coin, as the village has been on lockdown, suggesting that the thief is still nearby.

The players begin their investigation by questioning the guards, who mention that a merchant they didn't recognize delivered goods yesterday—a task usually performed by old Marlo. Sensing something amiss, they head to the stables in the courtyard. The stablehand confirms that he saw a merchant heading towards the market. At the market, they approach the baker, who is reluctant to talk until they buy some bread. The baker then tells them about a man who bought a large quantity of bread, seemingly preparing for a big trip, and suggests that he might be resting at the Broken Wheel Tavern. The players make their way to the tavern, only to see the thief running out the back. A chase ensues, and the thief magically compels the backyard chickens to attack the players. After a brief struggle, they defeat the chickens, but the thief escapes. Celine spots tracks leading to the carpenter, who reveals that some of his items were stolen, likely by the same thief. They notice someone disappearing behind a corner and give chase. They arrive at the fishing dock where Roken tries to unlock a door. After a failed attempt, he succeeds and they find old Marlo inside, tied up and gagged. Marlo tells them he saw someone heading towards the farm.

The players rush to the farm and see someone entering the windmill. Inside, they find the thief trying to flee in an air balloon. Deimos grabs onto the basket but falls when Roken accidentally shoots him with an arrow. In a desperate move, Celine throws a pointy rock, puncturing the balloon and causing it to crash into a rock, killing the thief. They retrieve the coin from his pocket and head back to the castle. Upon their return, they find the castle in chaos. In the throne room, they discover Therald's lifeless body, surrounded by councilmen who accuse the players of poisoning him. Guards arrest them and throw them into the dungeon. Mourning their friend, the players are surprised when Aelar arrives, believing in their innocence. He releases them and leads them to a secret passage. However, the guards catch up, and Aelar sacrifices himself, holding them off to ensure the players' escape. The session ends with the players fleeing through the secret passage, leaving behind the turmoil and the bodies of Therald and Aelar. Their mission now is to find the true culprits and clear their names.
