Klimákthropoi are the Lizardfolk native to the isle of New Dawn. The name is one the Navigni gave the Lizardfolk, roughly translating to ‘Scaled Folk’. Often shortened to simply ‘Klimák’.
The original tribes of these folk were found chiefly along the Northwestern beach coasts of the island. The scale patterns and coloration of these lizardfolk vary greatly, though there is a unifying feature among them, that being around the head, neck, or shoulders, they bear a striking patch or band or yellow to orange scales. These scales are considered their pride, using oils and such to keep them polished and gleaming.
History
These lizardfolk had long lived on the isle of New Dawn, far before the Navigni gave them their name. The used to live along the coastal jungles of the mainland, but were chased out by both goblins and gnolls, who managed to out-compete them in sheer numbers, retreating across the treacherous waters to the island where they could not be as easily followed.
These lizardfolk enjoyed a few centuries of relative isolation on this island, to the point where they began to become somewhat distinct from their mainland cousins. They suffered competition only from a few much more meager goblin tribes. The Lizardfolk thrived to the point where they started to develop into a few distinct subspecies depending on the climate and geography
When the Navigni arrived on the Island, the initial contact was somewhat strained, but quickly grew into a mutual relationship, as the Navigni learned from the wise Klimák that had lived in this land for generations, what they could eat, what dangers were on the isle, and the like.
So things went along, with New Dawn Building along the Rocky coast to the west, in the old ruins, while the Klimák kept mostly to the western beaches and Central valleys.
As interaction blossomed over the years, more of the young Klimák started to migrate, living nearer, and even within the walled city of New Dawn, their Aquatic capability, hardiness and strength a great aspect for labor. At first, they were seen as no more than dumb, cheap labor, but as the years wore on, they won more and more respect within the community, till in more recent decades, businesses run by Klimák have started to appear, as well as Klimák have been welcomed onto the council of the city, the peoples almost fully integrated into the culture of New Dawn.
Subspecies
WIP - Potential Subpages for each subspecies
Cragscale
Named not for their actual scale color or texture, but for their adept climbing ability, surprisingly well suited for the warm to cool mountains and valleys across the island. They have a heartier physique, and are physically stronger than the average lizardfolk, with their scale’s tending towards tones of grey with green that allow them to blend a bit with the mossy rocks and short scrub of the mountains and hils.
Aquatic Variant
This variant of the Lizardfolk thrived in the coast, born from those who spent much of their time fishing the waters. They have become semi-aquatic in their lifestyle, having developed gills, however in exchange they must live their days along the coast, their softer scales drying out if they are too long separated from immersion in water. When they dry out, the scales become susceptible to cracking and flaking away, revealing the tender flesh beneath, the sensation said to be excruciating to the point of debilitation.
Marshwalker
A strain of small Swamp Dwelling lizardfolk that comes from the mainland though far to the west. A strange, derelict ship one day floated along the coast of New Dawn. Instead of destroying it, some of the -Aquatic Variant~ were sent to investigate it. Within they found a few dozen tiny lizardfolk, starved and confused. They were quickly integrated into the populace of New Dawn after this, with a mildly rocky start due to their significantly differing culture. However, they were indispensable in the 13 Years War, as their penchant for poison and stealthy nature made them excellent at guerilla raids.
