Despite its appearance as a tree, it is more closely related to grasses. When cut down, its outer bark is like scales, within holding a network of densely packed fibers like straw. At the top of the palm a bush of thin, tightly packed green 'leaves' comes out the top, which are the very tips of the inner fibers.
The plant was originally seen as nothing more than a nuisance. Its name comes from one particularly ornery priest, who claimed only a tree planted by demons would bleed red. For many years it was seen as a nuisance, and even bad luck, until through some interaction with the Native Lizardfolk of the island, which the revealed that the Oil which the tree could be tapped for, was actually delicious when used in cooking.
A Babau Palm reaches maturity after around a year, Growing to a height between 50 and 70 Feet tall. The palms are harvested roughly every two weeks after reaching maturity, cutting off the top quarter to third of the plan. So long as no more than one third is cut off at one time, the palm can recover, and grow back within 3 weeks.
Due to the nature of their structure, Babau Palms are highly resistant to winds, bending instead of breaking from all but the most powerful gales.
