The Kardunashi Hoplites are the military and police force of Kardunash. The hoplite system is one of the oldest Kardunashi institutions and has existed since the days of the Kardunashi Kingdom. They are distinguished by their linen armor, plumed ridged helmets, spears, short chopping swords, and large circular shields. The Hoplites are citizen-soldiers with a moderate degree of military training. Though the standard kit calls for linen armor, hoplites are encouraged to purchase their own armor if they can afford it, and many sport bronze or iron armor. All citizens of the city are required to serve two years as hoplites and therefore many people pass armor down through the generations. As a result, Hoplite shields are often richly painted to reflect their family histories.
