The Bone Men, also called the Anagassi, are the native people of the Anagassi Isles. The Anagassi are considered a queer and strange folk by the people of mainland Yekare. They are known to eat snails, say little, and worship old and nameless gods. They have a reputation as fell sorcerers, heretics, demon worshippers, and savages. Legends claim that the Anagassi sacrifice every third infant to the sea gods, while other legends claim that every other infant is cut apart and fed to crabs. Though scholars dismiss these claims as tall-tales with little actual cultural backing, they are nonetheless widely believed across Yekare and the Anagassi have a reputation for savagery and soulessness as a result of these and other tales, both tall and true. Scholars speculate that the tales of infant sacrifice stem from the very real practice of sacrificing prisoners of war to the sea gods, though this practice has long since fallen out of fashion.
As there is little metal on the Anagassi Isles, the Anagassi tend to armor themselves with human bones, harvested from dead heroes and great warriors. Even with the strong trade which now exists between the Anagassi and the mainland, bone armor remains an important part of Anagassi identity. In the interests of protection, the bones are often now relegated to accents on metal armor. It is seen as a great honor for a native Anagassi's bones to be used for armor. It is believed that when wearing the bones of another, a part of their strength (or weakness) is absorbed by the wearer.
The Bone Men are known to have a far higher rate of twins than other peoples.
In appearance, the Anagassi are distinguished by their multicolored eyes. Their irises, as opposed to having a single color, instead have many colors, including colors considered nonstandard (such as pink, orange, and silver). The Anagassi are also known to have webbing between their fingers and toes.
