By tradition, death by the severing of the head is a privilege reserved for gentlefolk. Simple folk may be executed in a variety of interesting ways, but hanging is most common. In most jurisdictions, canon courts cannot inflict the death penalty, but must bind over the convicted
criminal to a secular court for punishment. In some jurisdictions, the death penalty is, by custom, only imposed by royal courts. See Law.
