Royal Hospital

The Royal Hospital of Lygos: Haven of Healing

The Royal Hospital of Lygos is a beacon of hope and restoration for the city’s citizens, blending the wonders of magic and medicine to provide care to all who enter its doors. Overseen by the brilliant and compassionate Gilbert Morell, a Half-Elf royal surgeon with unmatched skill, the hospital serves as both a place of healing and a center for medical innovation.

Architecture

The hospital’s design is simple yet elegant, prioritizing functionality while maintaining the grandeur expected of a royal institution. The building is constructed from smooth white stone, with large arched windows that allow sunlight to flood the interior, fostering an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Above the main entrance, an inscription reads:
"In service to life, we mend what is broken."

A small central dome caps the main building, painted with a mural of hands—one glowing with healing light and the other holding a scalpel—symbolizing the unity of magic and medicine.

The grounds surrounding the hospital feature herb gardens filled with medicinal plants tended by apothecaries and clerics. These gardens also serve as tranquil spaces where patients can recover in peace.

Interior Features

Inside, the hospital is divided into several wings, each dedicated to a specific aspect of healing. Clean and orderly, the halls are lined with enchanted lanterns that emit a soft, calming light.

  • The Healing Ward: The largest wing, with rows of beds separated by curtains. Here, patients receive care from clerics and medics, combining magical healing with traditional treatments. Each bed is equipped with enchanted sigils to monitor the patient’s vital signs and alert staff to emergencies.

  • The Surgical Theater: A sterile, well-lit room where Gilbert Morell and his team perform surgeries. The theater features both conventional surgical tools and magical implements, such as scalpels that seal wounds as they cut.

  • The Apothecary: A laboratory where potions, salves, and remedies are crafted using both alchemical and herbal techniques. Shelves are lined with vials of healing potions, antidotes, and other curative elixirs.

  • The Isolation Wing: A secure area for treating infectious diseases, with powerful wards to prevent contagion. Clerics specializing in restorative magic work tirelessly here, combating illnesses with both divine and practical methods.

  • The Teaching Hall: A lecture space where Gilbert Morell educates aspiring healers in the art of medicine and magic. Anatomical charts and enchanted diagrams adorn the walls, providing visual aids for his lessons.

  • The Chapel of Ilmater: A small sanctuary within the hospital, dedicated to Ilmater, the god of endurance and mercy. Patients and staff alike come here to pray for strength and healing.

Gilbert Morell

Gilbert Morell, the half-elf royal surgeon, is a master of his craft. His mixed heritage grants him the wisdom of age and the adaptability of youth, making him a figure of deep respect and admiration. His piercing green eyes and calm demeanor instill confidence in his patients, while his hands—steady and precise—are as skilled with a scalpel as they are with a healing spell.

Gilbert’s approach is one of balance: he believes that magic and medicine are two sides of the same coin. While he is a capable healer through magic, he insists on maintaining strong surgical and medicinal practices to complement it. He is known for his tireless dedication, often working long hours to ensure every patient receives the best possible care.

Staff and Patients

The hospital staff consists of a diverse group of clerics, alchemists, herbalists, and medics, each specializing in a particular field of healing. Apprentices and students from the Oghma Academy often work here as part of their training.

The hospital serves all citizens of Lygos, from the poorest commoners to the wealthiest nobles. While priority is often given to urgent cases, Gilbert ensures that no one is turned away without care, regardless of their status or ability to pay.

Role in Lygos

The Royal Hospital is a cornerstone of the city’s welfare system, embodying the Evermore dynasty’s commitment to its people. It is not only a place of healing but also a center for medical research and innovation, where new techniques and treatments are developed.

During times of crisis, such as plagues or natural disasters, the hospital becomes a hub of activity, with Gilbert Morell coordinating efforts to protect the city’s health.

Reputation

The Royal Hospital of Lygos is renowned throughout the realm as a leader in the art of healing. Its combination of cutting-edge medicine, powerful magic, and compassionate care has saved countless lives, making it a symbol of hope for the people of Lygos.

Hospital NPCs

1. Nurse Della Bramblethorn (Halfling Triage Nurse)
A short, sharp-eyed halfling woman with her brown hair tied back in a messy bun. Exhaustion lines her face, but her voice is crisp and cutting. She snaps at anyone who hesitates too long when answering her barrage of questions: “Where’s the wound? How deep? Don’t stammer, I’ve got twelve more bleeding behind you!” Despite her brusqueness, she runs the triage desk like clockwork, keeping order amid the chaos.

2. Mossen Cloudstep (Firbolg Attendant)
A gentle firbolg with kind blue eyes and soft, mossy hair. Mossen moves slowly and deliberately, carrying clean bandages and small vials of medicine. He hums soothing tunes while he works, often stopping to tell patients little jokes or stories to brighten their spirits. His cheerful presence makes him a favorite among long-term patients.

3. Kael Thistlemire (Tiefling Patient)
A lanky tiefling with crimson skin and a sheepish grin, Kael winces on a cot with a crossbow bolt sticking out of his thigh. After much prodding, he finally admits the embarrassing truth: he shot himself while trying to clean and restring his weapon. His mortification is nearly as bad as the wound.

4. Gruk & Dorn (Half-Orc Brawlers)
Two burly half-orc men sit side by side on cots, both sporting bandaged head wounds. They glower at one another, occasionally growling low in their throats. Neither will admit they were fighting each other, though their bruised knuckles and split lips tell the story. The staff sighs—this is not their first visit, and it won’t be their last.

5. Petalwing (Fairy Volunteer)
A tiny, sparkling fairy who flits gracefully through the hospital corridors, leaving faint trails of golden dust behind. Petalwing carries a satchel stuffed with fresh blooms and hands out flowers to patients, tucking them into bandages or leaving them on bedside tables. Her bright presence softens even the harshest wards, and even Nurse Della tolerates her cheer.
