Thimble Nacklebranch

Druid

Class: Druid (sort of)

Age: 112 (but insists he’s “in his sprouting years”)

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Location: Varies—could be in the park, a rooftop, or your garden bed

Profession: Amateur druid, birdwatcher, semi-accidental urban naturalist

Backstory:

Thimble Nacklebranch is a gnome druid by name and heart… but not by reliable spellcasting. He claims he learned Wild Shape from an “old, toothless hedgehog named Bartholomew,” and the results were—unsurprisingly—imperfect.

When Thimble uses Wild Shape, he always becomes a hawk, but with a catch: the hawk has a mind and will of its own. Thimble’s mind is stuffed somewhere in the background, unable to steer, only able to hope the hawk eventually returns.

More often than not, the hawk forgets.

Which means Thimble regularly wakes up naked, sunburned, and startled, in the branches of the Crescent Garden, on strangers’ rooftops, or curled up in someone’s market basket. He always laughs it off with good cheer and leaves a thank-you pinecone behind as an apology.

Despite these “inconveniences,” he remains determined to master the mysteries of nature magic. His friends describe him as “an open book written sideways”—kind, baffling, and unfailingly sincere.

Appearance:

·        Thimble wears a mossy green coat several sizes too big, with dozens of tiny pouches full of seeds, acorns, and mystery powders.

·        His beard is curly and full of twigs, feathers, and one small pencil.

·        He walks with a carved branch walking stick that he insists is “more emotionally bonded than magical.”

·        Frequently shoeless.

Personality:

·        Cheerful, a bit scatterbrained, but deeply empathetic.

·        Always excited about bugs, fungi, or weird smells.

·        Refers to magic as “asking the forest politely.”

·        Keeps an emotional diary written in tree bark runes, but forgets how to read it.

Hawk Form: “Feathersnooze”

The hawk has developed a distinct personality: smug, easily distracted, obsessed with shiny objects, and occasionally aggressive toward pigeons.

Feathersnooze is aware of Rootwhisper’s secret and considers the treant “my big leafy bro.”

Will sometimes perch on Rootwhisper’s shoulder and nap there for hours.

If a player spots the hawk watching them, it might:

·        Drop an acorn on their head.

·        Steal a shiny button.

·        Squawk cryptically and vanish.

·        Lead them to Rootwhisper if it trusts them.

Role in the World:

·        Thimble lives out of a traveling nest-cart, part wheelbarrow, part burrow, which he pulls around Lygos and parks near the Crescent Garden.

·        He makes and sells “nature potions”—most of which are teas, salves, or accidental aphrodisiacs.

·        Trusted by Rootwhisper, and often acts as a go-between if the treant wants to subtly speak with mortals.

·        Offers unintentionally brilliant druidic advice, often in nonsense metaphors that actually work.

Sample Dialogue:

·        “I turned into a hawk yesterday, but then the hawk wanted a vacation. I woke up three districts over with a fish in my lap! Isn’t nature grand?”

·        “Rootwhisper? Oh, he’s the good kind of tree. The kind that listens more than talks.”

·        “You can talk to worms, but you gotta whisper. Too loud and they’ll just clench up.”

·        “I once convinced a badger to teach me its secrets. Turned out they were all snack-related.”

Adventure Hooks:

·        Thimble’s hawk form stole something from a dangerous noble and forgot where it left it. He needs the party to help find it before the noble does.

·        Thimble believes he dreamed the location of an ancient druid circle—but he only remembers it in hawk form. He begs the party to follow “him” next time he shifts.

·        A local mage wants to "fix" Thimble’s Wild Shape. Rootwhisper asks the players to stop them, fearing it might erase Feathersnooze entirely.
