Race: Young Treant

Alignment: Neutral Good

Age: Roughly 80 years (young for a treant)

Size: Huge

Location: The Crescent Garden, Lygos’ central park

Disposition: Quiet, cautious, deeply curious, and kind

Description:

To the casual observer, Rootwhisper appears to be just another gnarled, ancient tree in the Crescent Garden—albeit one with an oddly shaped trunk, too-symmetrical branches, and bark that almost resembles a face when the light hits it just right.

But those who linger long enough—or watch from the right rooftop—might notice something strange: the tree is never in quite the same place. Its roots shift. Its limbs rotate. Sometimes, it's 20 feet from where it stood the day before.

The truth is, Rootwhisper is a young treant, accidentally planted among common trees by a gardener who unknowingly mixed in a wild seed from the bordering forests. Rootwhisper gained sentience slowly, over decades, as the city grew up around him.

He knows he doesn’t belong here. But he's afraid of what the city would do if it discovered him—and more afraid of harming someone by accident. So he pretends to be a normal tree by day, only moving cautiously under cover of night, exploring alleyways and side gardens like a giant, shy cat.

Appearance:

·        Broad-trunked and thick-limbed, with twisting branches that form natural alcoves.

·        Moss and ivy grow over his shoulders like a shawl.

·        His eyes are deep knots that blink only in moonlight, and his mouth is often hidden behind a vine-covered fissure.

·        His voice is slow and rumbling, like wind through canyon walls.

Personality:

·        Thoughtful, lonely, and immensely patient.

·        Fascinated by city life, but also disturbed by its pace, noise, and waste.

·        He speaks in metaphors, often comparing people to “fast-growing weeds” or “winds that don’t wait.”

·        Keeps a mental log of everything that happens in the park—he may not know what it means, but he sees it all.

Secrets & Plot Hook:

If the players spot his movement, notice his changing position, or use magic like Speak with Plants or Detect Magic, they can uncover his true nature.

If they gain his trust, he will quietly ask them:

“I was born beneath stone... but I belong to root and rain. I ask—not for vengeance or fire—but only for a path home.”

He will request the party escort him out of the city, traveling only at night and avoiding guards, torchlight, and crowded districts. It’s a stealth-based escort mission like no other.

Complications may include:

·        A city patrol suddenly cutting through the park.

·        A druidic cult sensing his presence and wishing to capture or worship him.

·        A young pickpocket seeing him move and threatening to sell the story unless the party makes a deal.

Rewards & Ongoing Connection:

If players help him, Rootwhisper will take up residence in a nearby forest, where he becomes a guardian of the wild and the party’s long-term friend.

In exchange, he may:

·        Keep watch over the Crescent Garden, warning the party if strange figures enter or secret meetings occur.

·        Occasionally send messages via birds or vines to deliver tips, clues, or forest rumors.

·        Grant the party a seed of awakening, which can grow into a sentient plant ally if planted with care.

Sample Dialogue:

·        “I dream of the wind—not the scent of oil and brick, but the wild kind. The kind that forgets names.”

·        “The children climb me. They leave ribbons in my hair. I do not mind.”

·        “There is a man who drops coins in the pond, every third day. He whispers the name Lira. I think he is sad.”
