Seven Satraps and Schamedar

This text is written in Alzhedo and is entitled Seven Satraps and Schamedar, dated 1373 DR, written by Urkitbaeran of Calimport. It appears to contain a summary of the history of the city of Schamedar in Calimshan, as well as the conflicts that led it to the state it was in the then-present day. A key passage reads as follows:

Many theories abound as to how that Shond Tharovin had acquired the Jahrawat al’Hawaathe so-called Living Gem. Some claim that he compacted with genies of the elemental Plane of Fire, perhaps even with the trapped spirit of Memnon himself to learn of its location. Still others hold that he had plundered the ruins of Shoonach to uncover the fabled artifact. Regardless of how it is that the wizard came upon the artifact, it was with the awesome power of the Living Gem that during the Year of the Shield, 1367 DR, that the native wizard Schamedar overthrew and slew the ruling council present and declared himself syl-vizar and caliph of Schamedar.

Tharovin's ambitions extended far beyond just Schamedar, as he sought to wrest control over Calimshan entire. In addition, Tharovin erected a temple known as the House of the Gem, dedicated to the Living Gem, which he claimed to worship and held as his most trusted advisor. The Cult of the Gem grew, and with it, Tharovin's ambitions, to the point that he began to send the destructive power of the Living Gem against even the city of Calimport far beyond.

In response to his predations, seven men of seven families along the River of Ice joined and vowed to overthrow the tyrannical Tharovin. These Seven Satraps as they dubbed themselves formed a rebellion to turn against Tharovin and the forces loyal to him. Tharovin retaliated by sending dark creatures he summoned against villages and towns along the River of Ice.

The Seven Satraps received aid when Tharovin at last overstepped, when wielding the power of the Living Gem over the streets of Calimport. The archmage Yoond Shalshymmyr sacrificed his life to curse Tharovin, reducing him to a gibbering abomination that fled beneath the streets of the City of Glory. Tharovin's location to this present day is unknown, but I would not be surprised if he still lurks in our city's undercity.

With the loss of Tharovin, the Cult of the Gem was on the backfoot, with the Seven Satraps leading the rebellion until at last during the Year of the Banner, 1368 DR, that the Cult of the Gem was forced to flee from Schamedar, taking the Living Gem with them to parts unknown. In the aftermath, the Seven Satraps did not return to their families but instead became recognized as the new rulers of Schamedar by the syl-pasha of Calimport. However, three of the Satraps, Batras yn Faruk el Beza, Daud el Akiil, and Saibh el Moadyph, came to rule on behalf of the Kahmir family and their own ambitions. The other four Satraps failed to evince any convincing opposition, owing to their own obligations to other criminal elements.

Ultimately, while the Seven Satraps had proved instrumental in ridding Schamedar of Tharovin and his cult, it seemed that their connections to the criminal elements of Calimshan proved stronger than the uprising they had brought up. All seven of the Satraps disappeared under 'mysterious circumstances.' Some believe it was due to obligations they owed to the Kahmir family or other criminal organizations of the land; others still hold that that they were slain by former soldiers of the Living Gem War who had grown tired of the corruption the Seven Satraps came to perpetuate; and still others rumor that the Seven Satraps abdicated voluntarily, electing to return to obscurity. Regardless of what was the case, the elf Vatarn Vahrim has restored its ruling Council of Vizars and has become recognized as the city's syl-vizar for the last three years.

For now, in spite of their deeds, it seems that the Seven Satraps are fated to fade into the annals of history, their true fate still yet a mystery.
