The Book of Brimstone

The Book of Brimstone

Wondrous item, T0

This book, along with anything written on its pages, can't be damaged by fire or immersion in water. In addition, the book doesn't deteriorate with age. While you read this book, you find your sense of inner malice amplified for the next 24 hours: when you are presented with an opportunity to act in a selfish or malevolent way, you are more tempted to do so.

This profane book is wrapped in the blackened hide of some unknown fiendish beast. It is warm to the touch and engraved with Infernal runes in dark red script. Celestials would find this book’s presence repulsive.

This blasphemous tome was written by the monk Andros, a worshipper of Mephistopheles, the archduke and lord of Cania, the eighth layer of the Nine Hells. Andros penned this book during his time spent in Mephistar, the palace of Mephistopheles within Cania. After penning this work, he became insane and was lost to the frigid wastes of Cania.

The book is divided into two parts, written entirely in Infernal. The first part concerns the proper worship and adoration of Mephistopheles, as well as the steps necessary to become a disciple of the archdevil. Various rituals are described within it, many of which involve gruesome sacrifice. The second part of the book is a collection of 27 arcane spells, each one more evil than the previous. The following spells are contained within the book:

1st-level: charm person, find familiar, ray of sickness

2nd-level: invisibility, scorching ray, suggestion

3rd-level: clairvoyance, fireball, vampiric touch

4th-level: blight, charm monster, immolation

5th-level: dominate person, infernal calling, planar binding

6th-level: investiture of flame, mass suggestion, soul cage

7th-level: forcecage, finger of death, power word pain

8th-level: antipathy/sympathy, dominate monster, incendiary cloud

9th-level: imprisonment, meteor swarm, power word kill

No room remains in the book to add any additional spells to it.

It is said that there are only four copies of the book in existence, and it would make for a prized piece for any collector, and can be sold for up to 15,000 gold pieces among affluent collectors or knowledgeable and wealthy scholars. In addition, given its ties to Mephistopheles and its rarity, cultists and devils who revere Mephistopheles that become aware of your possession of this book may try to persuade you to part from it or attempt to steal it for themselves by guile or by force.

One of the copies of the book was acquired as part of the events of the quest Heart of Hellfire Mountain. In the aftermath, the book was freely given to the great  library of Candlekeep as an entrance gift, allowing the party members of that quest access to Candlekeep in the future.
