Georgetown is a port city in eastern South Carolina, U.S. It lies near the Atlantic coast where the Great Pee Dee, Waccamaw, Black, and Sampit rivers enter Winyah Bay. It is home to the Brookgreen Plantation which is made up by four rice plantations. The plantations from south to north are The Oaks, Brookgreen, Springfield, and Laurel Hill. The plantation and surrounding facilities are owned by John Ward. Before his death in 1853, he held more than 1,000 enslaved African Americans and his estate (in his name) is still the largest slaveholder in the United States of America.
