The Cherokee or Anigiduwagi, are one of the indigenous peoples of the Southeastern Woodlands of the United States of America. They are concentrated in their homelands, in towns along river valleys of what is now southwestern North Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, edges of western South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northeastern Alabama. They are agrarian, live in permanent villages, and have begun to adopt some cultural and technological practices of the white settlers. They also developed their own writing system.
Today, in East-America only one Cherokee tribe is federally recognized: The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Tennessee and North Carolina. The Eastern Band has more than 10.000 tribal members.
