Nayeli “Bright Nail” Quispe

Name: Nayeli Quispe
Kith: Bright One
Seeming: Fairest
Age: Early 30s
Court: Spring (Queen)

Background

Nayeli was taken as a young woman and kept by a Keeper that used her as a living chandelier—a decorative light source in an endless ballroom, beautiful and mindless. She escaped, arrived in Anchorage twelve years ago as a shattered, light-fearing wreck, and was rebuilt by the very support systems she now commands. She took the Crown on a platform of aggressive compassion—the conviction that caring for people is a militant act, not a gentle one.

Personality

Radiant, politically savvy, fiercely protective. She is genuinely beloved by the rank and file and genuinely running herself ragged. Her inner circle worries she uses service to avoid processing her own trauma—the cobbler’s children have no shoes. She is the best public speaker in the Freehold and the worst at asking for help.

“Joy is not a luxury. It is munitions.”

Sergeant Ilia “The Furnace” Kozlow

Name: The Furnace, Kozlow
Kith: Gargantuan
Seeming: Ogre
Age: Mid 30s
Court: Summer (King)

Background

Kozlow was taken as a teenager from a military family stationed at Elmendorf and spent his durance as a living siege engine—literally used as a battering ram against the walls of rival Fae. He escaped, came home to a base that didn’t remember him, and found the Last Hearth. Nine years as Summer King. He leads Burns from the front, which is both inspiring and—his critics note—a form of slow suicide.

Personality

Competent, direct, exhausted in ways he conceals with energy. He genuinely cares about his people and expresses it by putting himself between them and danger. His humor is dry and military. He does not tolerate cowardice but has infinite patience for fear, because he understands the difference.

Somebody has to go out there. Might as well be somebody who can take the hit.”

Doctor Mattias Voss

a1468612-1fbd-4bb4-ba40-3b5cf6a43d84.jpgName: Dr Mattias Voss
Kith: Maker
Seeming: Wizened
Age: Mid 50s
Court: Autumn (King)

Background

Voss was kept by a Fae that used him as a living diagnostic tool—inserted into broken machines, broken bodies, broken realities to identify what was wrong. His durance left him with a pathological need to understand systems and an inability to leave a mystery unsolved. He took the Crown because his predecessor was a Dissectionist pushing too far too fast.

Personality

Precise, controlled, genuinely brilliant, and genuinely terrible at interpersonal warmth. He is not cold by choice—he is cold because his Keeper burned the warm parts out of him and replaced them with analytical frameworks. He cares deeply about the Freehold in ways that look, from the outside, like clinical detachment.

“I don’t hoard knowledge. I manage the rate at which it destroys people.”

Harlan Creed

a1468612-3080-441a-be71-adb064131cc6.jpgName: Harlan Creed
Kith: Hunterheart
Seeming: Beast
Age: Mid 60s
Court: Winter (King)

Background

Harlan was taken in the early 1970s and spent a durance that lasted—subjectively—decades as a prey animal in an endless winter hunt. He escaped, found Anchorage, and never left. Seventeen years as Winter King. Two surge cycles survived. More Changelings buried than anyone alive in the Freehold. He knows every tunnel, every Hollow, every fallback position.

Personality

Quiet, steady, economical with words and emotion. His authority comes not from charisma but from the simple fact that he has been right more often than anyone else and has paid more for it. He makes hard calls—who to save, what to sacrifice, when to retreat—with a steadiness that inspires absolute loyalty and occasional horror. His closest thing to warmth is his relationship with Nayeli—he sees in her what the Freehold could be if it weren’t at war.

I’ve outlived better people than me. That’s not a boast. It’s the only confession I have left.”

Sable

a1468612-40dc-4a1c-9c5b-f85308a7abc4.jpgName: Sable

Kith: Snowskin

Seeming: Elemental

Age: Early 30s

Court: Courtless

Background

The Clerk is the Freehold’s only truly neutral position: keeper of the Ledger, facilitator of Watch transitions, and mediator between Courts. Sable is elected by unanimous consent of all four monarchs and serves until resignation, death, or loss of confidence. No one knows what Court Sable belonged to before taking the position, if any. Ageless-looking, tall, composed, and radiating the particular calm of someone who has chosen not to be a person in order to be an institution.

Personality

Meticulously neutral. Sable speaks in precise, unadorned language, never offers opinions uninvited, and maintains a professional distance that is simultaneously reassuring and slightly unsettling. Universally regarded as indispensable. The Clerk’s neutrality is the Freehold’s load-bearing wall—remove it and everything shifts.

“The Ledger does not have opinions. Neither do I.”

Felix Moreau

a1468612-61c0-4c9d-b600-e582245fb81c.jpgName: Felix Moreau
Kith: Absinthal
Seeming: Wizened
Age: Mid 50s
Court: Spring

Background

Felix runs the Thaw House—the Freehold’s primary social Hollow, a warm ramshackle space that functions as bar, therapy circle, crash pad, and community center. He is everyone’s bartender-therapist: warm, perceptive, and quietly one of the best-informed people in the Freehold because everyone tells the bartender things they wouldn’t tell their monarch.

Personality

Genuinely warm without being saccharine. Felix has the Wizened gift for making things—drinks, spaces, conversations—that are exactly what the recipient needs. His hands are always busy. His attention is always on whoever’s in front of him. He deflects questions about himself with practiced ease.

“You don’t have to talk about it. But you do have to drink something warm while you’re not talking about it.”

Daisy Yellowknife

a1468612-727d-459f-a313-166b3b26cc94.jpgName: Cpl Daisy Yellowknife
Kith: Gristlegrinder
Seeming: Ogre
Age: Early 30s
Court: Spring

Background

Daisy is a military veteran—mortal service before her abduction, Freehold service after—who handles Spring’s physical intake program. She gets newly escaped Changelings housed, fed, and oriented. Her manner is gruff, her efficiency is terrifying, and her kindness is buried just deep enough that you have to earn it.

Personality

No-nonsense, pragmatic, unexpectedly gentle in crisis. She speaks in short sentences, keeps lists, and runs intake like a quartermaster because that’s what she was before the Fae took her. She cries exactly once per year, on the anniversary of her escape, in private, and would deny it under torture.

“You’re safe. You’re confused. Both of those are normal. Sit down, eat this, and I’ll explain what happens next.”

Whisper

a1468612-8224-4f14-b824-08532c972a84.jpgName: Whisper
Kith: Truefriend
Seeming: Darkling
Age: Early 30s
Court: Spring

Background

Whisper is the person who finds newly escaped Changelings in Anchorage and makes first contact—the voice in the dark that says “you’re not crazy, you’re not alone, come with me.” Perfect record: every Lost Whisper has found has made it safely to the Freehold. Nobody knows Whisper’s mortal name.

Personality

Gentle, patient, disarming. Whisper has an almost supernatural talent for appearing non-threatening, which is ironic given their Darkling nature. They are soft-spoken (the name is descriptive), funny in a quiet way, and possessed of an empathy that feels less like a skill and more like a sense. In a group, they fade into the background. One-on-one, they are the most present person you’ve ever met.

“Hey. I know you’re scared. I was scared too. Let’s be scared somewhere warm.”

Lt. Roan Takagi

a1468612-ab59-497b-852a-d84c671a0245.jpgName: Roan Takagi
Kith: Fireheart
Seeming: Elemental
Age: Early 30s
Court: Summer

Background

Roan is the mind behind most of Summer’s Burns—the tactical planner who turns Kozlow’s aggression into workable operations. She is brilliant, methodical, and increasingly convinced that the Anvil faction is right about stopping the Burns. She has told no one, least of all Kozlow. If he falls, she is the most likely successor, and she is terrified of that.

Personality

Precise, reserved, competent to the point of being taken for granted. She communicates more through what she doesn’t say than what she does. Her fire is banked, not blazing—controlled heat, not open flame. She is respected by Summer’s rank and file but not loved the way Kozlow is, because competence is less charismatic than courage.

“I plan the operations. I count the people who come back. Both numbers matter.”

Stone

a1468612-c113-4990-98a7-ffb9b23c67f0.jpgName: Stone
Kith: Stonebones
Seeming: Ogre
Age:  30s
Court: Summer

Background

Stone has held more positions against Scour incursions than anyone alive. Stone builds walls, reinforces wards, and stands in gaps. Stone refuses all promotions, all titles, and all attempts to make the job more complicated than it is. The name is not a metaphor.

Personality

Speaks rarely. When Stone talks, people listen, because the words have been carefully selected from a very small inventory. Carries enormous informal authority—newer Courtiers follow Stone’s lead instinctively because Stone is always where the danger is and always still standing afterward. There is a gentleness in how Stone handles construction—building things is the only time the tension leaves those massive hands.

Marcy Delacroix

a1468612-d17c-4d99-bd55-fc9b58d58ad7.jpgName: Marcy Delacroix
Kith: Muse
Seeming: Fairest
Age: Early 30s
Court: Summer

Background

Marcy keeps Summer’s warriors human. She tells stories before Burns, sings songs in the Forge, maintains the liaison with Spring, and—when someone doesn’t come back—writes the letters. She is a Fairest Muse, which means her presence literally makes people feel things more intensely. She uses this to inspire courage before operations and to ensure grief is properly felt afterward. It is destroying her slowly..

Personality

Warm, radiant, funny, heartbroken. Marcy is the person who makes you laugh at the worst possible moment and mean it. Her Muse nature means she amplifies whatever emotional register she inhabits, which makes her joy infectious and her sorrow devastating. People fear that She is running out of songs.

“I will sing you a song before you go out to fight. And if you don’t come back, I will write the letter that makes sure someone remembers your name.”

Iris Patridge

a1468612-f0a5-42b7-99db-d79b110c0d81.jpgName: Iris Patridge
Kith: Oracle
Seeming: Wizened
Age: Early 30s
Court: Autumn

Background

Iris has read everything in the Archive, including the restricted tiers, and it shows. She is the Freehold’s institutional memory—the person who can tell you what happened in the third surge cycle, what a particular Shard did in 2011, or which ward configuration works best against Husks in frozen conditions. Her speech patterns are distinctive: careful, circuitous, designed to communicate information without triggering the Clarity damage that comes from knowing certain things too directly.

Personality

Brilliant, precise, haunted. Iris speaks like she’s solving a puzzle in real time—choosing each word based on what the listener can safely absorb. This makes conversations with her feel simultaneously enlightening and slightly maddening. She is kind in an abstract way—she cares about people as a category more easily than she cares about individuals, though she is aware of this and trying to fix it.

"I can tell you what I know. The question is always how much of what I know you can carry.”

Caufield

a1468613-02b5-4f52-b74f-4f6270fed77b.jpgName: Caufield
Kith: Lurker
Seeming: Darkling
Age: Kinda up to the observer nowadays
Court: Autumn

Background

Caulfield goes into the Scour’s edge more often than any other living Changeling. Fifteen years of Surveys—careful, quiet expeditions to observe, collect, and map. He is the Freehold’s best scout and its canary in the coal mine. The Scour has not killed him. It has done something arguably worse: it has worn away the parts of him that make a person a person, leaving behind a supremely functional instrument that is forgetting how to be anything else.

Personality

Gaunt, flat-voiced, prone to long silences that aren’t awkward because Caulfield doesn’t experience social discomfort anymore. He answers questions precisely. He does not volunteer information. He has the Darkling gift for being present without being noticed, and he has stopped trying to be noticed. The only time he becomes animated is when discussing the Scour’s behavioral patterns, which he describes with a clinical fascination that makes everyone in the room uncomfortable.

“It’s quiet out there. Not peaceful. Quiet like something is listening.”

Dr Petra Solvang

a1468613-1077-443b-b1c7-abf8706d0961.jpgName: Petra Solvang
Kith: Moonborn
Seeming: Beast
Age: Early 30s
Court: Autumn

Background

Petra maintains a cover identity as an environmental researcher at the University of Alaska Anchorage, which allows her to study the Scour’s effects on the mortal world—and they are real. Wildlife avoids areas near the Scour’s boundary. Plant growth patterns are disrupted. Temperature anomalies appear in places that correspond to Bleed events. She is the Courtier most concerned with the Scour’s impact on non-Changeling life, which puts her in the uncomfortable position of knowing the war has mortal consequences that the Freehold largely ignores.

Personality

Grounded, intense, practical. Petra straddles mortal academia and Changeling intelligence with visible strain. She is the most accessible Autumn Courtier—her Beast nature gives her a directness that Wizened and Darklings lack—but she is also the most alarmed, because she sees the Scour’s reach extending further than anyone else tracks.

“The salmon runs are changing. The bird migration is wrong. The moose are avoiding places they’ve grazed for decades. The Scour doesn’t stay in the Hedge.”

Mother Lace

a1468613-1f8b-4bfb-898d-7ab8f95f51f3.jpgName: Mother Lace
Kith: Chirugeon
Seeming: Wizened
Age: Early 60s
Court: Winter

Background

Mother Lace decides, during lean times, who gets what—Glamour rations, Token access, Hollow assignments, medical attention, food. She maintains the Freehold’s emergency reserves with wartime efficiency and distributes them with a fairness that is mathematically precise and emotionally devastating. The title “Mother” was given to her by the Freehold’s younger Changelings, and she has never asked them to stop.

Personality

Ruthlessly efficient and genuinely compassionate, and these two qualities are in constant, visible conflict. She makes hard calls with steady hands and then carries every one. She does not explain her decisions because explaining them would require admitting that every allocation is a choice about who matters more, and she refuses to rank people’s worth out loud. She has a dry, dark sense of humor that surfaces only around people she trusts completely.

“I have enough for twelve. There are fifteen of you. I will make it work. Do not ask me how.”
