Accents in Adra

The following are the real-world accents which correspond to the lands and peoples in Adra. They should help you either decide how to characterize your own voice, the kinds of words you use, or perhaps simply let you know if you are going against the grain on what will be common among others from your culture. Each accent entry will point you in the direction of what that accent sounds like spoken aloud in the English language.

Note on the Difficulty of Accents: Not the players, and the definitely not I, will be able to do all of the accents listed here. I wanted to design a world of accents that made the world feel real, vibrant, and diverse. But, obviously many of them are not accents that we are used to, and as such, many will require practice to get down. I myself will practice accents that I think will come up in the game, but many I might not feel capable of pulling off. If I don't think I can pull an accent off very well at all, I'll just use my own. If you feel the same, I recommend you do the same - use your own.

Aarakocra

The Aarakocrans, those people who come from one of the four mountain Conclaves, speak with a typical Surfer-West Coast American accent. I'm sure you immediately have a picture in your head forming, but see below for various examples, or voices I think are in the general vicinity of this kind of accent.

Aegyri

The Aegyri, that is, the people who live in Aegyr, the lands in the near vicinity of it, and near the lands of Halfpost, Sunnyvale, and Southreach all speak with a kind of Transatlantic accent, representing their position between a mixture of different cultures.

In a perfect world, the Bahrians would speak with the accent of ancient Babylonians or Assyrians. Unfortunately, such dialects are lost to time. Instead, Bahrians will speak with the accent of modern day Iraqis, those today living in Mesopotamia.

Blackwood, Drow, Fey, and Shadar-Kai

The elves and people of the Blackwood have an accent that corresponds to my own, which I suppose is either a General American Accent, the kind you would hear on TV, or, is a slight mixture of the General American Accent and 'The Region' or Chicago-land Accent. How would I know? Anyway, study it, and study it well.

Calakmulan

Calakmulans, that is the people inhabiting the Great Northern Swamp of Arathia, have a broadly Lousianian accent - that is, the accents of Cajun, Creole, and New Orleans speakers common to Louisiana. In the inland swamps, Cajun is the most appropriate accent. On the coasts, Creole is the most appropriate accent. In Tikal, New Orleans is the most appropriate accent.

Duergar

The accent belonging to the Duergar and their Fortresses in the Underdark roughly corresponds to an Old English, Original Pronunciation, Elizabethan, or Shakespearean Accent, spoken about the time of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. This accent is not natively spoken by anyone in the modern day, but there have been fantastic reconstructions of it over the years. See below for guidance.

Gamoran

However, it is a language that has been somewhat distorted overtime, and certainly one with contours and subtleties difficult to master. As such, a broadly Latin American accent will get close to the kind of accent which Gamorans have.

Goblinoid

The goblinoid people, that is those in particular being from the region north of the Blackwood, which lies both in Zaltia and in parts of the White Wastes, have an accent that is a slight modification of an English Cockney accent. In particular, we take the cockney accent, and we speak through our teeth, emphasizing any words that that begin or end with the sounds 'f', 't', 'b', 'k or hard c', 'j', 'p', 'qu', 'r', 's', or 'v'. In addition, for lack of a better term, the accent should sound guttural at the back of the throat, and the easiest way to achieve this is to keep a good bit of spit near the back of one's mouth when one is speaking. See especially "Goblinoid Accent" below for an example. Even non-Goblins in the Goblinoid culture will have this accent, though perhaps to a lessened degree - Goblins in other culture may add some manner of teethiness to their voice, but don't use this accent as a rule.

Grung

The Grung, those brutal froggish slavers and raiders in the Rathian Jungle, have a fictionalized accent. The accent can be best characterized perhaps as a broadly eastern European accent, but one which is extremely guttural and over pronounced. The accent flows from the throat, and should involve rolled Rs, glottal stops, and toad-like noises aplenty. See the below accent guide made by the beautiful and talented Lilly Hollingsworth, whose accent for some NPCs in her RPGs inspired this accent. She gives better tips and examples of the actual sound of the accent in there. As with any fictionalized accent, I encourage everyone to really make this your own! (Tip: It helps to have spit in your mouth, or a drink nearby for this accent, or your throat will get dry very quickly)

Half-elven

While half-elves maintain a distinct culture, they do not maintain a distinct accent. They are likely to carry the accent of the local culture in which they reside, or perhaps the accent of a culture which they recently resided in only a few generations previously.

Halish

The Halish, those living on the isle of Halstat, and its outlying isles, including the pirate haven of Ebonwreath Cove, all speak with an English accent. Those in the largest city of Ragassi speak with cockney accents, while those outside of that city speak with accents corresponding from west to east in Halstat, to those accents which are north to south in England. So, someone from nearby Randon likely speaks with an accent akin to Yorkshire, while someone from Goliath will speak with an accent akin to Kent.

The Lowlanders, that is, the people natively from the peninsular Archduchies of Aegyri and some of the outlying country, have a Southern American accent. Those from the western two duchies have more of a upper-class Georgian accent, while those from the eastern two duchies have more of a Alabaman or Mississippian accent.

Mehtian

The Mehtians, that is, the people of the Satrapy of Ekmeht, and to some degree the regions in which it presses against its neighbors, speak with either a broadly Arabian or Egyptian accent. Once again, an ancient Egyptian accent would be most preferable if such things were possible, but it doesn't seem that they are, so modern accents from the regions will get us most of the way there.

Orcish

The Orcish people speak with an accent depending on where the orcish in question are from. Orc tribes regularly trade, fight alongside of, fight with, and are captured by, the other feudal peoples who live near to them. Therefore, they tend to share accents with these people - Orcs in Halstat for example have a Northern English accent akin to the Old Halish. Orcs living within the borders of Arissia have a Latin accent. Orcs living in the borderlands with Oberbrücken tend to have a german, latin, or slavic accent. This trend holds where ever an orcish culture is established. Speak with your DM for more details.

Piratic

Often, the accents of Pirates belong to the kinds of areas they make port in most often. However, some areas are dominated entirely by pirate-types, and in these ports, the Piratic accent roughly corresponds to a Nova Scotian accent. Alternatively, consider a Maine accent.

The accent of the Saravoans, that is the inhabitants of the old Kingdom of Saravo, and the people around the Lake Saravo to this day, and those relations which have migrated elsewhere in the Wild Steppes, have an accent which corresponds to a Russian, or broadly Slavic accent - the Saravoans live sometimes spread out by more than a thousand miles, and so we should expect their accent to be pretty broadly spread as well. Serpentine

The Serpentine people, that is the snake-lords of the tall grasses in Kelior, have a fictionalized accent. Their accent is normally Arabic in character, but more important than that is that there accent is eminently snake-like. The best example of this kind of snake-like pronunciation is Parseltongue from Harry Potter - essentially a whispering and hissing kind of speech, with great emphasis placed on any 's' sounds, and little emphasis placed on hard consonants like 'k'.

Sowsokain & Sunsokan

The collective peoples of the Sowsokain and Sunsokan, that is the people living in the Sun Soaked Isles, the Flaring Islands, and the Alasi Islands, have a Belter Accent. This is a unique fictional accent developed for the show The Expanse. It is inspired by a handfull of real accents. See below:

The accent of a person from the Steppe culture will depend on the sub-culture, race, or region that person comes from - to name a few, Serpentine, Oberen, Saravoan, Boggart, Noregran, Orcish (Arissian or Saravoan most likely). See those accents in this guide for more details, or speak with the DM.
