"Mama, how come the smiths in town don't make armor? It sure seems like they could make more money that way than by making nails and horseshoes..."

Artisan Upbringing

The Artisan Upbringing is in many ways the archetypical middleborn upbringing - in any given city, town, or even most villages, the core of the 'middle class' are made up by artisans and craftsmen. Artisans make up a great variety of professions, all of which are defined by highly skilled labor, physically intensive work, and usually the production of some trade good in the end - smiths, leatherworkers, carpenters, and weavers are all examples.

Being a child to parents or guardians who are artisans would likely be a fairly grounded childhood - far too busy to keep constant watch over their children, but enough free-time, and a little spending money, to prevent children from being neglected in most cases. Often however, there is almost always an expectation that artisans will teach their children their trade, and that one day they will take up the family business - in many places, it is in fact illegal to exist a family trade without permission from a noble. This expectation can be a heavy burden for some children to bare, but for others, it can be a stable goal to aim for later in life.

Characters from an Artisan upbringing are left with a set of fine working tools, ones likely used by their parent or guardian in the trade, and which are professional grade. Choose a set of Masterwork Tools from the following types: Carpenter's, Cobbler's, Glassblower's, Jeweler's, Leatherworker's, Mason's, Potter's, Smith's, Weaver's, or Woodcarver's. The masterwork tools grant a +1 to checks using them for the purpose of their corresponding tool proficiency.

If you choose the Artisan Upbringing, you gain the following:

~Either a +1 to your Strength score or a +1 to your Dexterity score~

~A -1 to your Charisma score~

~A language of your choice, one taught to you by a parent, guardian, or mentor from your upbringing~

~A Sub-Discipline in every social skill on checks dealing with other members of Artisan Upbringing~

~A set of Masterwork Tools of a type of your choice~
