"You wonderin' why I use here a one-legged stool? Ey', I imagine a three or four legged one would be a step more comfortable, but that's the root of the thing - charcoal men fall asleep, and the pile goes up, and you lose all your work. A chef don't fall asleep during their cookery, and neither do we - if you fall asleep sitting on the stool, you lose your balance and fall over."

-Charcoal Maker, Finn MacAuliffe

Laboring Upbringing

Laborers are the people that do the work that others don't generally want to do - muckrakers, gongfarmers, stableboys, ostlers, and scullery maids. They tend to work for room and board rather than coin - when they do work for coin it is generally because the work is so awful that the only way anyone could be motivated to do it was with hard cash, such as gongfarming. They are sometimes the servants in castles, but generally only the lowest of positions, those suitable for the lowborn. Most laboring jobs are found in cities.

Laboring jobs tend to provide little available time and energy to those who have them - as such, the children of such people may sometimes feel neglected. Furthermore, many laboring jobs tend to claim the lives of laborers, from ill-treatment and dangerous conditions. This, combined with the disdain many in society hold for such laborers, can lead the children of many laborers to seek an improvement in their own conditions upon getting older. Sometimes, these children can build up a resentment against the established order for forcing classes of individuals into trading their life for a living.

Characters from a Laboring Upbringing will have something quite useful to most people in a laboring profession - a way to keep foul smells and gasses out of the nostrils and lungs. This Miasma Mask is a way to filter out smells, and has a chamber which can be filled with dried flowers and herbs to mask the scent of what isn't filtered out. When worn, it grants advantage on Saving Throws to resist airborne diseases and to resist the effects or damage from poison gasses. It weighs 3lbs.
