Tribal Upbringing

A Tribal Upbringing is perhaps the most broad of all those covered herein. Tribes can perhaps be described as the primary archetype of human organization - several family groups bind together into a small political unit, which lives in a central hub, the tribe. Within tribes there are fewer specialized positions, and generally fall into the broad categories of those who get food, those who craft, those who lead, and those who pray. So, a basket weaver might also sharpen flints, and a hunter will also know how to fish. Tribes might move once in a few generations, but generally hold to the same location, and maintain rough political boundaries in the same way a state would.

Children growing up in a tribe will spend their days honing skills which they will later use in their adult lives. However, even with these responsibilities, with their parents usually constantly occupied with the day-to-day of living on the frontier, children living in tribes have plenty of unsupervised free-time. It is usually spent exploring the nearby wilds, playing childhood games, and listening 'round fires to the stories of the elders. In many ways, the life frees children from many of the labor and hardships that come from living in a feudal world. However, life in a tribe is great when it is good, and awful when it is bad. Hard winters, conflict, and famine can all run a tribe ragged - these intermittent hardships are bad enough to drive some children from a tribal upbringing later in life to seek the shelter and comforts of the city.

Characters from a Tribal Upbringing have an extremely useful tool from their life on the frontier - Strengthened Rope. This rope has been strengthened with something to make it tougher and more reliable than traditional hempen rope, whether coated in a protective substance, reinforced with unicorn hair, or built from especially resilient fibers. This has the same stats as hemp rope, but instead has 15 hit points and requires a DC 20 Strength Check to break.

If you choose the Tribal Upbringing, you gain the following:
