"Your parents were wise to send you here. I understand that there is an academy in Masas that is quite good, but it cannot rival us here at Laketown. Now, I presume your parents left you with some sort of writ-of-credit? The best education doesn't come cheap."

The Bursar of Laketown University, Pierre de Beumont

Formal Education

Formal Education is the most organized and elite way to gain an education. It entails either going to some sort of institution with a number of teachers and students, such as a school, academy, university, institute, etc., or involves studying privately under the tutelage of one or a few tutors. The latter is traditionally what a formal education has always been in most parts of the world, with the wealthiest of noble families traditionally hiring tutors (or enslaving them) to teach their children. In recent centuries, formal institutions have become more common in places like Tesiphon, Kamomenus and Haeland, and have been more common in Alz Gamora, Valentera, and Arissia for some time.

Those who have had the privilege of attending a formal learning institution are viewed to have a pedigree above the average person; in particular those who have gained access to a prestigious organization. In these institutions, "renaissance men" study every topic under the sun, and bestow wisdom directly from the goddess Aereideia to their students - at least, this is often the public perception. However, adventurers who have come from such institutions may be doubted, particularly in their ability to survive hardships and fight monsters.

Formal Education can often leave its students unprepared for the world of actual affairs - the classroom is often clean cut and static, while the world is chaotic and messy. So, the graduates of these formal institutions are often flabbergasted when they intercept the kinds of problems to be found outside of the classroom. However, they are also inculcated with a strong hunger for learning, and wherever they go through their journeys in the world, they will likely want to take pieces of knowledge from these places and store them, either in their mind, or perhaps in an actual physical location.
