"Now, Peter, you'll want to see this part. They've picked out the main mast, the most important choice of wood on the whole ship. It needs to be sturdy, tall, and straight as an arrow. One tree in a hundred, maybe even in a thousand is suitable for it. These moments here will define the whole project."
Veteran Shipbuilder, Billy Shipton
Nautical Experience
The rivers, lakes, and seas of Adra serve as the sustenance for millions, and the central pillar for whole economies. Despite this, it is also a wholly alien and unwelcoming environment to most Kith. Indeed, many of the common folk of Adra hardly know how to swim, much less thrive at sea. So, a whole class of laborers, sailors, marines, merchants, and administrators must be trained in the taming of the untamable ocean. It is not only hard work, but it is dangerous - many who begin to train in these trades perish before they master it.
In many parts of Adra, those who work on or around the ocean are associated with the lower class. Such professions are often dangerous and low-paying, and as such the types of people to take them on tend to have no other options available. Seamen have their own language and their own way of life, and it is expected that if you have lived such a life for some time, that you will be changed, perhaps in the eyes of some even lowered by it. Simultaneously, there is often a great romantic appeal to a life at sea, and some find the nautical life to be the stuff of legend and fairy tales.
Those who have had experience on the sea, or in positions relating to it, have often accrued experience dealing with unpredictable situations. In such cases, versatility and flexibility are necessary skillsets to acquire. As such, those with nautical experience are not only spontaneously responsive to a range of different problems, but they are often some of the most prepared kinds of adventurers to find. Essential goods and tools such as rope, pitons, hammers, and crowbars are often found rolling around their backpacks, ready for the right problem to solve.
