"If you travel up the Western Lotus, it will take you not a few weeks before you come across the legacy of my predecessors. Such power, wielded so recklessly - the power becomes beyond you in the end."

Wizard of the Whistling Tower, Nabrenor - El Llamador de la Muerte

Magi Apprenticeship

While magic schools have in recent years become more common than in the past, traditionally the way anyone has been educated in the magical arts was through an apprenticeship. These magi apprenticeships could take many forms - under a Wizard, lone Druid, studying under a powerful Cleric, or mentorship from a Sorcerer, Witch, or Bard. The archetype most think of is that of the wizard in their tower, taking on an apprentice to share their vast arcane knowledge with before they die.

Practitioners of magic are quite rare, particularly from the perspective of the average peasant - wizards and other such magi have little reason to visit the backwater burgs of the world, and most who have the affinity for magical ability are never discovered, living and dying the life of a farmer. Some who are lucky however are taken out of the mundane world to be raised in a life of magic - it is a life wholly alien to the average people of Adra, and to many, those who have received any glimpse into this world will seem similarly alien as well. Those who have had an apprenticeship should expect others to react with fear, and often with an expectation of incredible power.

Hidden throughout the mundane world is magical power. Ancient tombs, wizened sages, strange cults, obscure monsters, or more official magical power is to be found throughout Adra, but it often takes someone with the right background to find it. As such, those who were educated in a magical tradition are likely to search for the eldritch in the everyday - often, when there is no eldritch to be found, such adventurers are left disinterested. As such, gold is usually far less prized by such characters as magic - knowledge, items, creatures, or anything that has the touch of the fantastical.
