"You stay huddled down, with your knuckles pressed into the back of the man in front of you - if they push against the formation, it compresses like a spring, because of this simple act. Then, when you hear the whistle, you get ready to push forward, and soon enough, you get your own six minutes of fame."

Arissian Drill Instructor, Batrichanus Ribellis

Military Assignments

The world is a prisoner's dilemma - it would certainly be a better place with no war or battle, and all would benefit far more than they do now if all put down their swords - but if we put down our swords, and they don't put down theirs, then where does that leave us? Civilizations need armies to protect their holdings and people, secure key resources, and expand their hegemony, all in an attempt to build a more stable and prosperous state. In feudal and classical systems, the vast majority of the surplus coin and grain is funneled into the military, with excess food being stockpiled and shipped to the front lines, and excess coin filling the war chests needed to convince men to turn their plowshares into swords. In exchange for good pay and a chance at higher command and influence, military assignments carry more danger than any other kind of occupation.
